    Hey guys.

My name is justin and I am from fort defiance virginia. I just bought a 1982 xj550 for $300. It ran when I got it but was told to clean the carbs. Now the problem I'm running into is I can't find the parts that I need to replace. I took it to a shop that works on yamaha to see if they could find anything and they say the parts are obsolete. Any idea where I can find emulsion tubes, main jets, pilot jets, and needles?

Also, are any carbs interchangable with the engines I'm the xj550? Ex. Will the carbs off an xj650 fit on my 550 or will the guts of the 650 carbs fit into the 550 carbs.

    Thanks

Hey I'm like an hour away from you. Have you checked the tubes your self. They may just need a good cleaning. A lot of the parts just need scrubbing and then buy all new rubber parts and put them back together. Although in having loads of fun putting this fuel rail back together.

Stoopkid22 - read the jet numbers, Main and Pilot, and post them here,
You may need to sand the surface with 600 Grit or even an emery board will do for easier reading.
Emulsion tubes don't "wear out" unless they were soaked in acid for years.

If you want to ensure no carb troubles, go the extra effort and replace (8) tthrottle shaft seals, order fuel rail and "Pilot" "O" rings too.

You should read a couple carb rebuild "How-To" threads.

Ok, you've already learned a couple things here!

    1. shops will tell you things like that because:
    a. they don't know how to work on these bikes so they make stuff up to either scare you away and/or jack up the price (to either scare you away, or make you pay for not having been scared away)
    b. they don't want to search for the parts/they don't know where to look so they make stuff up to either scare you away and/or jack up the price (to either scare you away, or make you pay for not having been scared away)

    2. Every single part IS available for your bike, very readily and easily
    a. by Contacting Len Chacal either by PM, little button at the bottom of any of his posts, or by clicking on the xj4Ever banner at the top right corner of any screen.....just as someone already pointed out.
    b. There are MANY people on here who have stashes of parts and parts bikes, so all you have to do is just ask. Used parts will be readily available, too.
    c. I don't recall any/many 'unobtanium' parts for the 550 Maxim, so it's not going to be too hard for you.

    Next lesson......Read about:

    1. carb cleaning
    2. shim clearance checking
    3.rear brake delamination

Last, as you go through your bike, BE METICULOUS.
