I am excited to ride and even more excite to learn about, work on and enjoy getting to know her.

I am hoping to learn a lot here and make as many friends and get as much information as possible to get the best out of my bike.

    See ya on the Forums!

Be willing to listen and learn, and you'll be fine.

    Welcome aboard.

One of the single greatest things you'll benefit from is attending a carb clinic when you can. There are several of them around, primarily spring thru fall. You'll see them posted as they get planned. I host one every June in the middle of NY. Start learning your bike now as you get it into a safe reliable condition, then attend a clinic and get it dialed in, and meet other Xj owners, collectors, restorers........

    - Awesome...
Yeah I am going to need one of those. Is it a hands-on with my own bike or a general "how-to?"

Either ..... Most people ride in, others will trailer in, others drive in. Some come to help out, some come to learn how to do their own work, some come to watch, ask, learn, then go home to try it. Some bring their own tools....

    Many different possibilities:)

    - Awesome... Thanks guys!

I have a few more quick questions....

How much/what kind of oil should I use/put in her *giggity* for an oil change. It looks easy enough other than some other plug that the manual says to drain but others say not to...

I have heard mixed opinions but I can't really find anything around here about it. Is there a "basic maintenance" forum? ha ha!

Also... My choke cable seems to be loose so it is kinda sketchy. Any tips on adjusting it? The plastic seems loose (not broken) and pops out of the plastic lever housing that provides the tension...

    HeLp!

    THANKS ALL!!

    - Great thanks!
Do they sell that at Auto Zone or Advanced Auto? Will STP or another brand with the same weight made for motorcycles work? Synthetic?

Also how much is required for an oil change?

I get my oil from the local yamaha dealer, MotoPrimo, and I always use the yamalube brand. My xj650 takes 2500mL for a standard oil change, 2800mL for a oil & filter change. Assuming the 750 is similar. It should also be stamped on the clutch cover next to the oil filler cap.

Not able to comment on any other brands, but some of the wizards here may be able to suggest alternatives.

I believe the choke cable has a barrel adjuster to tension the cable. If not trace the cable to its hanger above the carbs and adjust the position there.
The little lifter lever fork thingies that lift the choke plungers on the carbs should rest about 1/16" - 1/8" below the base of the plungers.. there are some other posts regarding this, including photos.

The idea is that when the choke is OFF, the plungers are fully bottomed out in their shafts. If not you will be running rich.

Any 20W50 motorcycle oil will work. Quite a few of us use Valvoline. which is available at any auto parts store. I use CARQUEST oil filters (I believe they're made Fram) and they come with new 'o' rings.

    - You guys are the best... Thank You!

I am looking to do this Tues before I start riding her. I saw a video on Youtube and it looks pretty straight forward but he used Car oil and from what I read (and these responses) I see that is not the way to go...

    2.5Qts is about correct?
Is the oil supposed to show at half or all the way in the little window?

Newbie is excited to ride but all these hours at work is killing me...

slackard you wouldn't happen to have the link for the pages showing choke cable adjustment would you? I have had little to no luck with the search function on this site...

For oil advice click the link in my signature (car oil bad for wet-clutch motorcycle).

The amount is cast into the clutch cover, near the oil fill hole.

There are two lines engraved in the cover next to the sight glass. Anywhere between the lines is safe, but general practice is to fill to the upper line, leaving a bubble at the top so you can catch the odd chance of fuel leaking past the float needles and flooding the crankcase.
