Without me being aware of it, my 19 year old son has apparently been giving the side-eye to my XJ700, and decided to join me in a little chat session while I was degreasing the engine. General mechanic stuff, he helps me change oil and brake work and minor maintenance stuff on the family cars so he is somewhat familiar with how things work. Anyway, yesterday afternoon once I finished up the carb work and was scrubbing away the mung he came out and joined in, then finally dropped the bomb; "So dad, you're gonna let me ride this bike when it's done, right?" My response was as long as he puts in the sweat equity he can use it as much as he wants. I taught him to ride way back when he was 11, running around fields and dirt bike parks on an old KE100 I restored, and while his sister was taking the MSF course a couple years ago I gave them both a bunch of soccer cones and had her set up the typical obstacle courses and turns they were doing and show him how to do them as well. Needless to say this will not preclude him from taking the MSF course prior to riding, and I have made the point both verbally and by way of painful example that gear is the 2nd best investment he will make in his motorcycling endeavors (training being, of course #1). But once this bike comes together it may become necessary for me to source another XJ, preferably a Seca 750, which I hadn't really planned on. Either that or another Ducati, seeing as how I still have my special tools for adjusting the valves on desmo stuff.

You? Advocating for a limited number of XJ's in ones garage? Or are you just trying to horde them all for your own collection? :D

I started riding my '85 XJ700 about the same age as your son. It's a great bike and very forgiving! My first bike was my dad's 1980 XS850...that was a different story. It would kick over to the side from the torque when the engine was killed due to poor clutch techniques. As for the XJ700, plenty fast, comfortable, and had a low(er) center of gravity which I feel made it more forgiving during operation.

Good luck on your search for another XJ! :D
