My father-in-law and I picked up a 1986 Maxim X 700 that has been bobbed. The frame looks good, the engine is there, and so are the carbs. I cannot get it running yet until I find a TCI and do some major rocket surgery to the wiring harness, which has been removed from the bike by the PO.

I can do the wiring harness, and I found the minimum wiring diagram for the XJ bikes, which will come in handy.

I need to find a TCI that will work for this bike. I see plenty of TCIs on ebay stating they fit both the 85 and 86 models. Some of them claim to fit both the Maxim X and the Maxim standard. Will either of those work?

I found on here, reading the parts catalog the specific part number for the '86 Maxim X. I've also ran a search on the forum and haven't found my answer.

If other years or engine sizes (like the 750, which is almost identical) would work, that'd be good info too.

You need the TCI for the 85/86 XJ700 X. I think you also may need to check whether your's is a California Emissions bike, too.......I seem to recall that those TCI's were a little different because of that, but check with Len Chacal on that.......... Thanks Hogfiddles,

I checked out the XJ4ever pages and saw that there is a difference between the standard and X models. Although, I did not see anything written for the cali models. I'm realistic enough to know that using a standard XJ700 TCI would probably not work, but hopeful that someone had used one and it did work.

There are a few TCI's available for the standard, and a few for the X, but are more expensive.

After I get the TCI, then I'll be doing some major custom wiring to make it work. I'll most likely install jumpers for the clutch and kickstand safety switch.

The 700 air and the 700 water are completely different, different advance curves etc. There are no "California versions" of each TCI, the Cali bikes on had some minor fuel system/emissions-vapor recovery changes over the 49-state bikes.

You need the 700-X tci unit for your bike. We should have some good used ones available.
