    Mark all four carbs with an engraving pen or spring loaded punch (1-2-3-4), mark the throttle plates at the top face of each so that you put them back in exactly as they came out. Take each carb apart one at a time, removing each from the rack. Thoroughly clean everything, you may not need to rebuild them so much as just clear out the accumulated gunk. Take special care of the diaphragms and other rubber parts, be careful with brass jets and parts which are easy to round or strip out. Replace throttle shaft seals and bowl gaskets, reassemble, start working on the 2nd carb and so on and so forth, then re rack and reinstall.

    Make sure you carefully and accurately wet-set your float levels: http://www.xj4ever.com/setting%20fuel%20levels.pdf

    Do a good accurate bench sync before returning the carbs to the bike;

    And be sure your valve clearances are in spec before trying to do your running vac sync.

    Speaking of bench sync.....

    When I assembled the rack I just rebuild, instead of using a paper clip or the like, I was able to eyeball the throttle plates via the first enrichment hole in the bore. Basically, I moved #3 to the edge of the first enrichment hole(covering the second) with the idle speed adjustment. Then I did the same for the other three using the sync screws. After I installed the rack on the bike and vac-sync'd, I found that I was only an inch off of each other(via my oil manometer).

    Don't know if it was dumb luck or not. However, I think I will try this technique in future setups.

    I do it the same way. Trying to "feeler" the gaps just doesn't cut it.

    +1. Doing it this way puts em' in tweaking range to "dead on" using the vac gauges.

    +1 on lining them up on the enrichment holes......exactly the way i did it.....& they are very close to being right on......small tweaks at vac time....Carbtune Pro 4 gets them dead on.....
