air box install

So I did not and have never taken the air box off a bike so im not sure how it goes back on.it seems to large to just go back in. Any suggestions from y'all on how this is done. The carbs are off.this is for a 85 xj700

 

Tell me about it, on my 650 seca the Airbox has to go in before the engine. Don't ask me how I learned that.

 

dont quote me on this but on most xj's doesn't the airbox have to be installed before the engine? if this is the case for you. HAVE FUN!

 

I tried a lot of things before deducing that the airbox was the LAST major item to come off the bike, and I'll be pretty PO'ed at myself if I don't put it in first when I put my 650 back together.

Oh sweet I got it . did not have to take it a part. Used some lumber and my foot.

 

On the 85/86 700
All you have to do is: remove the carbs, starter, clutch cable and clutch cable bracket(on top of clutch case). With top of airbox removed, insert from left side of bike and shove back towards rear of bike. It will pop right in.
I've done it a couple of times.

 

I was amazed how tricky it was on the 550 to get it (and teh battery holder) in on a bare frame. Think I ended up squeezing the two things togther and lots of jiggling..

Good to know, I tried every which way I could think of trying to remove it from my 86 XJ700 so that I would have more room to pull the engine, but I ended up removing the engine first anyway.

 

Sounds like brute force got it for you.
I once tried to remove mine from my xj650 rj and gave up for fear of damaging things.
I just did it when I had the engine out for unrelated reasons.
