I have an 1981 650 maxim and i have been searching the web for intake boots. The boots that goes from carb to engine. I know chacal has them and i may order them from him. I was wondering if their is any other models that use the same boots and can work with mine. so they would be easier to find online.
I hopefully want to spend around $100 for all 4 boots.

From memory the XJ750 intakes are the same but it won't help you. I looked for about a year and then bought a full set of 4 genuine items for USD $200 from partspak about a year ago (sorry chacal). The next cheapest I could find were about $150 more. My old items were only fair condition and I sold them for $45 on ebay. You can try the liquid insulation (electrical tape) on them. That is supposed to seal them but they aren't new rubber so they will stay rigid.

He has an '81. Pre-YICS. Only two of the 750 manifolds are the same.

If they're not cracked all the way through, they can be repaired with adhesive RTV.

Liquid electrical tape is best reserved for its intended use. It doesn't hold up well in other, more harsh applications.

Fusion tape from a hardware store, maybe Wal-mart?, works well. It isn't adhesive, but the tighter you stretch it around the boots the stronger it "fuses" together. Supposed to be airtight and waterproof. Used it on mine and cannot find any leaks whatsoever, plus it's relatively flexible. It's basically rubber.

I just picked up an 81 Maxim 650 as well. I purchased these boots from Sirius Consolidated here in Ontario, here is a link.

They are not meant for the 81 650 but I've bolted them up and they look like they should fit, I'm waiting for float bowl gaskets before I can put them back in but when they come in I'll report back to let you know if they'll work.

Repairs on boots don't last long. The RTV lasts longer because it stands up to the fuel exposure while the tape and inner-tube fixes will not.
Best to repair with the RTV while waiting on your new intake boots to arrive.

We have them in stock, not cheap, but don't forget that they last about 20-30 years.....

Just as a follow up, the boots I have linked to in my first post from SCI do in fact fit the 81 Maxim 650.

Not unless you have a 1982-later (yics) head on it.........although the intakes will physically "fit" onto a non-yics head ---the flanges and bolt spacings are the same-----the two left intakes will be oriented "cockeyed" on the head.............this is because the intake manifolds curve both "upwards" and "inwards (towards the centerline of the bike)"..........those two left manifolds will now be curving upwards (that's okay) but also "outwards", away from the bike centerline, which will make fitting the carbs quite tricky and will almost guarantee a vacuum leak.

There's a reason why Yamaha did things they way they did, and specified parts for specific applications..........things which are not always easily apparent to the naked eye unless you know what to look for.
