1981 xj550 maxim fork spring upgrade

    I am about to change the fork oil and upgrade to progressive suspension fork springs.Just would like to know if anyone has done this? tip's

    Couple people have recently with great results, so they say. Would like to myself, but have other things in line first. I know the progressive springs can be found at bikebandit.com. Can't remember who's done it. A quick browse might help...

    Many have done it, myself included, and a worthy upgrade it is.

    Use a good dedicated fork oil - in my experience it works better than plain engine oil. I went with 15 wt fork oil, cuz I'm a fat guy - YMMV.

    The hardest part is getting the spacer size right. I think they recommend something like a 1.5" spacer, but in my bike it ended up being about 5" long to get any pre-load at all.
