Hey guys, so I decided to put the centre stand on my 84 xj650. It came with the side stand on it already and my question is this:
Is the same spring used for both stands? Having a real hard time getting this spring on the centre stand! See pic below!
    Thanks!

    Pic doesn't work.

The centerstand spring is MUCH larger in diameter than the sidestand spring(s.) Short, large diameter coils, long "legs." And even the correct spring is a major pain to get installed.

You put pennies or dimes into the spring coil with the stand "down", then put the stand up and unbolt - - the spring will have no tension.

Carefully stretch the spring (just a little) using a come-a-long between a truck and a tree, or anything solid, insert some pennies - - install.

I made an error installing the center stand & exhaust on my 550.
I know its easier to install the spring with the centre stand "loose" and then line up the bolts but I had already installed the exhaust and you cant get to teh bolts with the exhaust in the way I was not going to undo it. (mufflers are hard-corroded onto the collector)

So I got a chain and connected that to the spring, flipped the stand up and used my foot on the middle part of the chain to extend the spring while I puled on the far end of the chain.
    Not easy, but it worked.
and now I have the chain permanently installed because the spring has captured it. (gonna get a dremel onto it)

Update, I put the spring on the bike and stand first and pulled the stand into place! I used the same spring that was on the side stand and seems to work well! Wasn't an easy task tho! Done nonetheless!
Thx again for all the tips!

Don't forget to check it in a few weeks because the center stand is heavier than the side stand, your spring may get stretched and the stand may get too low.

Pay close attention to any scraping sounds. That smaller spring may not hold the center stand well in a bumpy turn.

Thanks guys, I will definitely watch for this! Although I think I have the right spring, after seeing some pics on ebay they look very similar!

hooking the spring on and then pulling the stand into place is how I used to do it, that was easy enough (long arms help), but now I just use one of my snowmobile spring pullers. Even easier.

It's a simple tool.... Probably one of my favorite ones--- no more fighting with springs on anything
