6K-RPM 70MPH and climbing

Sometimes on my morning commute, I am afforded the luxury of a wide open freeway on the 10. After the 5k harmony zone this bike really gets its feet! WOW>

However I am a safe rider and I was gaining on what traffic there was, so I had to release Beast back to a cruise. Damn, that's a great feel.

Makes you want to hunker the shoulders down and twist it wide open.

 

You can go WFO in 4th too, or 3rd if you prefer

I have had mine up to 75mph while still in 3rd.. and
you are barely holding on.. don't watch the speedometer
but the tach
once out of first only shift while in the 7 to 9000 range
it is a lot of fun..

 

I am admittedly, a genuinely old fart. However, I'm not dead yet and still live to ride--- fast.

I commute on my XJ whenever possible; and generally behave myself in Detroit traffic, as is necessary to survive urban combat supermoto as that is what it truly is. You best have quick reflexes and some damn good suspension or else...

But out in the country (where I live, a village of 1700 in farm country) it's a different matter. My XJ550R regularly sees its 10K rpm redline, and loves it. I cruise at about 80mph; it just feels right. And which is the other side of 6K. Bike never breaks a sweat.

Yamaha considers 5000 rpm "cruise" for the XJ series. Rev it. You're not hurting it (as long as it's in a proper state of tune.)

 

I have been "throttling up" quite a bit on mine.....bike is running sweet....

I agree with fitz...these bikes feel right at home in the 5000-6000 rpm range.... 2nd & 3rd are the best gears on my bike.....they pull hard & fast.....

What a great feeling to have this bike dialed in......

valves in spec, carbs cleaned, vac sync'd & colortuned

 

I hit 105mph with mine not too long ago...it had to be done. It was still pulling slowly, but the turns come a lot faster.

 

I did around 105 mph with my Maxim750X in fourth gear (close to the red zone on the tach), I'm pretty sure I would have hit 120 mph in fifth but it wasn't the right kind of road to go that fast...

 

In past years I have been moderate about revving, more since I didn't 100% trust all my tune work, but since last year I have been more aggressive since Veronika is in really good tune now.

Nothing like being the lead vehicle at a stop light on a 65 mph highway, light turns green, then look back after about 6 seconds to see the rest of the traffic JUST getting past the intersection (insert hair in the wind emoticon here)

I'm still dealing with my stumble, that being said... i was cruising with a friend on a cb550 and he passed me going a fair clip (90Mph). I leaned in on the old seca and go around him (in the stumble range), then whoosh when i got around 6K...

I don't know how fast i was going but i was at 8500 RPM in 5th, not slow. leaned right over on the tank and chin on the handlebar risers good speed there!

 

8500 RPM's in 5th on a 750 would put you somewhere around 120MPH (which I've officially never done on a public roadway).

 

Good to know with the 80Mph *please conserve* speedo. Never met another car coming the opposite direction and while not safe for sure it's something that had to happen at least once. I don't know why anyone would have the need of a faster bike to be honest, other than get onto the track with it.

 

For those that have been to the CNYCC, they know where the next house up the road is (just at the other end of my small field).....
Anyway, I can leave from a stop at the bottom of my drive, and pass that house ( my mother-in-law's, incidentally ) at 100mph on my 900rk.

I got to experience 109 in June. On my annual ride with my buddy and his VStrom, we hit a strait in the NW part of Colorado.

It was smooth as silk, and he told me later that 109 was his top speedo reading.
