After replacing my 33 year old clutch and choke cables (clutch cable broke last month). I finally decided to put my new throttle cable on.

Took a bunch of pics of the old one's path prior to replacing.
Put the new one on and everything was good in the driveway. Went to the store this morning and when backing out of the parking spot the RPM's shot up to 3,000 then dropped down when I started driving.

Got home and have to do a Y-turn deal at the top of the drive to be able to back into the garage. Started backing up and the RPM's went flying up to 8,000!

Noticed that the new cable was being 'pinched' at the looped wire at the top of the right fork and the headlight bracket. Every time I would turn the handle bars to the right the cable would pull and cause the RPM's to rise.
Removed the cable from the wire loop and now eveything is good. . .
didn't bother to see if the old and new cables were the same length.

Here is a sketchy picture of where the old cable went through the wire loop.
Curious if anyone else had a similar issue with newer throttle cables.

Did you get he correct cable? The Seca cables are shorter than the ones for the Maxim, and many resellers don't know, or don't care.

I got it from Len . . . It can't be wrong!

By-passing the wire loop, it seems happy and free, no tugging or pulling when handle bars are turned.

You may be able to solve that by letting a bit of slack out of the cable with the tensioner adjustment. Check it isn't binding where it goes down under the tank, too.

Is it routed correctly? Isn't it supposed to go behind the headlight mounting ear, and not in front of it?

That is how mine is routed, behind the mounting ear. Just around the fork tube and along the frame under the tank above the #3 cylinder.

Interesting - and certainly makes sense - given the location of the wire loop it would fit better behind the ear . . .

Took a bunch of pics prior to disconnecting anything just to have a reference. . .
Prior to installation I disconnected both ends of the old cable and left it in place, then routed the new cable along side of it.

Here is another picture from the back showing the cable going 'in front' of the ear.

As far as I know the previous owner never changed the throttle cable or had the headlight removed . . . . curious. :?

On my bike the cable does not ride, thread though a wire loop. Looking at your last picture, my cable follows out and around the front of the fork and up to the throttle on the handlebar. I haven't had any issues with it at all.

THIS seems to indicate that the cable should go in front of the headlight ear.
