After 9yrs running on the previous software this website had to be migrated to something more current and supported. I was going to take a slow approach to the migration process. But the double migration process proved to be VERY painful and unreliable. After many long hours, I decided it had to be done this week. Some of you may have noticed that XJBikes was down for few days. Now the website is back on the new software platform.

I already noticed some issues caused by the migration but we'll have to deal with them as we move forward. There is no going back to the old software. Please be patient during this transition period as it's going to take time to tweak things here and there.

We have many new features and functions on this platform. For example, you can cut and paste Youtube URL and place the video directly in your post using the "Media" button. The site is mobile device friendly (I tested on Android tablet and phone). There are many other features and functions that will be added in the near future.

p.s. was that normal to have to reset my password?

I'm also glad that the forum hasn't been down for too long, the Seca is finally back on the road, but I will still need help for sure, and I'm so addicted to the forum that I felt abandoned, sort of...

I like the new site. It works great with my iPhone. Nice job Sno. I was getting bored without anything to read that was interesting. This site helps with my boredom. :)

Seems to be working relatively well considering it is something comparable to transplanting a body part, LOL. Great work Sno! I would like to throw out a suggestion for discussion that is mildly related to the migration. I absolutely love XJbikes and the way it has been. And sure I will love it more with the software upgrade. The only thing I wish it had was more topic categories. Other sites I visit have the topic sections organized by the motorcycles systems, not much different than a motorcycle service manual would be (i.e., Engine, Carburetor, Electrical, Chassis, Paint And Body Work and Tools.). That would cover the technical forums. The the current General, Chat and Modifications forums would still be there of course, but over time their purpose would change and be less technical as people start posting in the more specific related areas. The General forum for example would have ride reports and the bike related (non-technical) posts. The Modifications would pretty much still be the same. But could be more project related.
Anyhow, like I said, just wanted to throw it out for discussion. I'm sure the reaction will rangee from "who cares" to "it is perfect just the way it is" to "good food for thought". Personally, I use other sites that are organized this way and find it much easier to navigate for topics that I'm interested in. Just nice having posts of posts profiling one's dog (Chat section) separated from a post on carb syncing (Carburetor section). I know this is probably not the time and Sno has bigger fish to fry right now and doesn't need any extra headaches. But maybe something for the future if there is a strong consensus for it. And I apologize in advance this offends anybody here. Since I'm sure some people have strong feelings about this site and wouldn't want anything to be tinkered with.

Hey everyone. Yesterday was a long night. Yes, I expect mixed feedback good and bad.

I know that the old forum posted hyperlinks still point to the old site. I'm not sure what can be done about that just yet.

Many things still need to be configured and adjusted. But the core seems to be working and I wanted to let you back in on the site.

I welcome new suggestions and ideas so keep them coming. I'm open to adding new forums & sections to organize the content. But who would go through the existing content to move it to the appropriate sections?

    SnoSherrif, it looks great!
I'm sure it was a major pain in the arse to set it all up so cheer so much for all the hard work.
    Just one thing..
the "latest posts" bit was always the first and sometimes the only thing I looked at. can we get something like that in the new system?

I think you are talking about the old scrolling "Latest Forum Posts" section. It's on my list to get something similar to that. In the meantime, when you are logged in there is a button at the top called "New Posts". I think it's similar in functionality.

I went to update the link in my signature to match the new thread location, and URLs are apparently not allowed in our signatures. And the signatures have to be really short, too. Looks like 20-25 character limit. I'm guessing that's a default setting SnoSheriff will have to change.

I could NOT change my password. Tried multiple times.
Prompted that the user name already existed. Tried different user name and was told that the provided e- mail address already existed . . . .
Color me computer illiterate - how do I get back to being me?

P.S., don't mean to sound snarky - certainly appreciate the massive under taking and patience involved with an ordeal as big as this. Cheers to you SnoSheriff! :)

Very true Sno, that is one of the costs vs. the benefits. One option is not to move anything at all but give users the option of moving a old threads they own, where they were the OP. A second option would be to use scripts. I have no idea what system you are now using and what the underlying database is. If for example, the webstite software utilizes MYSQL (like the old site did because I know it threw a MYSQL error from time to time), then a few sql scripts could do the job. Just matter of querying the subject line for the certain words like 'Carburetor" and setting the category (Key or flag ??) type so it is moved to the appropriate category. Wouldn't catch everything, but most of them.

And I guess this was not the most opportune time to bring this up anyhow. Sorting the bugs out is what everybody really cares about right now.

Note: Hey, I just noticed when creating this post. When I highlighted the text from your message, I got a "reply' option that popped up at the end of the line. I selected 'reply' and it automatically inserted it into the new message with the appropriate tags.
    Very neat!

    Herculean effort Sno, thanks.

Somehow my email got dis-connected from my old screen name, Jrb24. It just wouldn't send me a new email so i had to create a new identity. I am now JB24. No worries, but you may want to delete the "old me". In any case, I'm glad I exist again:D!

Reset my password, got logged in, poking around through the account settings and saw the alert that I was being "followed". Is anyone else a bit creeped out by that, or is it just me? I doubt it, but is there any way for a user to not allow other users to "follow" them?

Yes, I realize it's likely a Facebook kind of thing, but homey don't do social media.

Other than that, the site looks good so far. It'll take a bit of getting used to, but hey... that's the price of progress.

SnoSheriff, great job on the migration. Thank you.
No need to answer because you'll have a lot to do but it might be an option to run a routine changing all the old forum posts from xjbikes.com to say xjbikes1.com, name the old web server to xjbikes1.com in the DNS entry and leave it running for the time being.

I had a new member register and send me a PM asking for some help on resetting. I took a minute and made a quick walk-through for anyone reading this who is having trouble getting back into their account. Click on the "view attachment" buttons to see the pictures.

The best way to get the password back is to ask the site to send you a new password by way of email.

First, click the "Log in or sign up" button on the top right.

    View attachment 14153

Then, below the password field, there's a link that says "Forgot your password?" Click there.

    View attachment 14154

You should now type in your usual site username in the first box and then answer the security question in the second box (they've been showing up as simple addition questions for me here). Press the "Reset Password" button at the bottom.

    View attachment 14155

Now, mosey over and check your email. You should have an email from the site confirming you want a password reset that looks something like this:

    View attachment 14156

Click that big long gibberish link in the middle. The site now knows to make a new password and email it to you. It will come in a second email, that looks like this:

    View attachment 14157

Except your new password will be there, not a giant red box (I don't want y'all knowing my password now do I??).

Hey, I just discovered a neat "Reply" feature. You can select some of the posted text and the "reply" bubble auto appears. I'm using Firefox. Here is a screenshot to show this feature

Would it be possible to eventually make the separating lines between the items a little bit darker?

It would help a lot to match the infos on the left with the infos on the right.

I noticed a lot of users are not using some of the important features of the new software. You can now "like" threads and replies to threads. Apparently the likes go to help rank users. In other words, it ranks lower users who have a tendency to reply with "Looks clean" and "Nice bike" and will allow users who actually reply with helpful or relevant information to higher rank. So start clicking "like" on the good replies!

Also, the "shoutbox" is no longer a shoutbox. Its more like a Facebook status update. You can like these posts as well, and even reply to the updates themselves. Great for mini conversations that dont require a new thread be made. For instance, My carbs should be back and into my SECA tomorrow or Tuesday. I wont make a thread about it, but you bet Ill be adding a status update and be awaiting all of the congrats and offers for cigars on my status update.

Thanks again to SnoSheriff for the arduous undertaking.

Probably already aware but just in case:
One click on the members ATARI provides this info, and one click to close. Sometimes extra clicks seems like too much, but at least the info is readily available.

I miss the "Wizard" status. There are many members here that the name wizard as in expert is so appropriate

    1. I was trying to wait until the migration was complete. Didn't make it. The suspense was eating at me. This is slick. I really like many of the new features and extremely like the smart phone capability (100% easier on my eyes). Thanks Sno.

P.S. - I'm not trying to sound like I've been donating $ to help with funding; I haven't. I know you are still working on a lot of different things here but please don't leave out a way to donate. Thanks again.

Edit 9/23: I see it Sno. Worked fine. Every little bit counts right? Thanks.

It doesn't give the status that we all worked so hard to achieve......it just says "active member" or "new member" or "member".

I want my status back.......I'm sure Rick, and BigFitz, etc...... don't like just being another "active member" now.......lol
