I need to replace the valve cover gasket on my 1981 XJ650 and don't want to spend the money for an OEM style replacement, so I'm considering using an RTV gasket maker product instead.
I see that Permatex makes one called Ultra Black that resists oil.
Has anyone had success using this type of product under their valve cover?
    Any advice would be appreciated.

I'd advise against the Ultra Black. It will work, but there is a risk of blobs (from squeeseout) breaking off inside of the valve cover and blocking oil passages. If you must use a gasket making compound look for a non-hardening type, such as http://www.permatex.com/products-2/...ts/permatex-form-a-gasket-no-2-sealant-detail. It's much easier to apply so that there is no excess to squeese out from the mating surfaces, and if there is any excess it will not form blobs that block the oilways.

Thank you for you good insight K-Moe. I definitely agree with you. The risk of a blob getting loose inside far outweighs any other benefits of an RTV product.
    I'm steering clear of it.

I'm going to go with the Permatex Form A Gasket No. 2
