Just a quick question I cant find a 100% answer on. I see the manual calls for either an 80 or 80/90 Hypoid GL-4 oil, locally all I can find is GL5 oil, is it safe to use this or should I just go online and order the GL4 stuff? Thanks.

Stick with GL-4. I can't remember if there are any brass parts or zinc-plated parts in the final drive, but if there are GL-5 will eat them for lunch.

From page 26 of the xj750RJ Owner's Manual:

    Recommended oil:
SAE 80 API "GL-4" Hypoid gear oil
If desired, an SAE 80W/90 hypoid gear oil
may be used for all conditions.
    Note: --------------------------------------------
"GL-4" is a quality and additive rating. "GL-
5" or "GL-6" rated hypoid gear oils may also
    be used
    ---------------------------------------------------

So, is this a misprint of sorts or can it be trusted?

Would you use a full synthetic? I am looking at the oils I sell at my store and the only GL-4 I carry is an Amsoil product.

This question "sort of" came up again. I looked in both my copies of the FSM and the Haynes and do not find the note about using GL-5 in either copy. This may be a case of a misprint in the owner's manual, or in the service manuals.

Who has a spare final drive to tear into, and the time to do it?
