So it got stuck in first on my way home. Tore left cover off and I found a couple big pieces of what looks to be the chain guide.
I couldn't get it out of that hole from the left side.....
So I took the right cover off and the clutch is in the way (duh...)

    So what's next?

Can I still ride it after I somehow extract the broken pieces? What was the purpose of those guides?

I don't think you can get to it through the clutch side of the engine. Either fish it out from the left side, or pull the engine, flip it over and pull off the bottom of the case. It sounds like a big task, but it's not that tough.

Doubtful the chain is buggered up, it is the main drive chain that runs between the crank and generator/stator.

A link to the emergency guidectomy in case you want to try again. Not sure of your location and if it is time to pack it in for the year, but if you need just a bit more riding time before the season end the consensus seems to be that the bikes can be ridden without the guide for a period.

I ride year round..... so I can just keep on riding her without making plans to strip the motor apart to replace the guides eh?

My Chain guide just broke and I'm in the middle of rebuilding it now, once the parts come in, I'm on to the rebuild! It's best to get it replaced. You can maybe pull some of the chunks out of the shifting drum, however I think this is a temporary solution. I've seen a few posts about chain slap, where the chain will hit the soft aluminum case and wear away the metal, causing a weak spot in the case.

I think the guide also places some tension on the chain, but not too sure...

    I feel your pain o_O
