    Ok lads, here's the scoop:
As I posted on an earlier thread, I found a set of new intake boots for my 1981 XJ650.

I was excited, till they arrived: I saw that the boots they sent all looked the same, meaning the sync tubes were all on the same side of the bolt holes.

My boots have the sync tubes on opposing sides of the bolt holes?!
Meaning there's two kinda of boots on my bike.
And I don't see how the boots would fit otherwise.
Specifically, looking FWD, the left hand boots sync tube, would hit against the engine.
I had the company re-send me another set, thinking they made a mistake..
Lo, I received another set exactly the SAME!!

    Am I going crazy?!
The followinglink shows the carb boots with the tubes all on the SAME side.
(have to drill thru to my bike)

Could one of you smart fellas tel me where I'm nuts?
I am assuming this bike is stock.
I have no reason to suspect otherwise.

ps. plate on fork is stamped 1981

    Re: Urgent question re: boots

That link you used didn't work for me - I'm guessing it's specific to your browser session.

On my 1981 XJ750rh Seca, the sync inlets all point straight up. The left two boots are the same and the right to are the same. The sunc/bolt pattern is the same for all 4, but I believe the boots are angles to be on the left or right hand side.

So I don't know where you're nuts, but that's how it is on my bike.

    Re: Urgent question re: boots

Same with mine - all 4 of the vacuum ports point straight up.
Caps on #1, 2 and 4, and the petcock vacuum tube connects to #3.

    Re: Urgent question re: boots

All of the boots on my 81 Maxim 650 are exactly the same. She's bone stock. The 81 Seca 750 has the two right and two left combo like everyone else. Do you perhaps have a swapped head on your hands?

    Re: Urgent question re: boots

Near as I can tell, the difference between the two sides on the 82 650 Maxim is the LH ones kick to the right and the RH ones kick to the left. I wonder what was different on the older models, the parts diagram seems to show them all kicking toward the center.

Do you have a YICS port on your bike? If so, I'll bet someone put a newer engine in it.

okok, so mission #1: Identify your bike properly.
    I have a 1982 XJ650J
    Not a 1981 XJ650H
    Sheesh...
It's like the govt set this up or something..

Alright, here's the scoop: With photos.

So I started looking through the online Yamaha parts catalog, and expanded my search to include just about every permutation of XJ650 I could find: and I see NO intake boots ("Joint, Carburetor") that have the sync tubes on the RIGHT side of the upper allen bolt.

See this excerpt from the catalog:

Now, here's photos of my Right & Left side boots:
Please help me figure out what I have?!
    For the love of sanity!

Your pictures look exactly like my bike. That's just the way the caps fit on.

You are correct though - there are 2 different boots. That image from Yamaha is wrong. Look at the part #'s:
    Cyl 1&2 get part #5G2-13586-01-00
    Cyl 3&4 get part #5G2-13596-01-00

The left side boots have the mounting bolts top/right & bottom/left
The right side boots have them top/left & bottom/right

    bump.
I was hoping the Rickster would perhaps take a stab at identifying just what type of engine IS in my bike: since the frame id's it as an 82' XJ650J: however, the Yamaha parts catalog differs...

    hmm

Well do the VIN's match? Engine to frame?

The only difference in the 650 engines from 81 to 82 was the addition of YICS.

I can see your YICS port in the last picture.

That engine is an 82 or 83.

Are you sure those intakes are leaking? My set looked pretty bad, SWMBO got me a new set for X-mas. When I went to put the new ones on saw that the cracking on the old ones was just on the surface. Clean as a whistle inside, airtight and flexible. I put the new ones on anyhow.

Do you want my old set? $35 to your door, but you have to send me one each of your old ones (I mount them to the bench to hold carbs while setting floats). You'll need to make or buy gaskets.

Eeek! I'd still fork out for new ones even at this point. Used manifolds are a cheap way to buy time 'till you can get the new ones. But you don't know how much time you've bought!

    I'm really confused.

I went down and looked at a set still in the box.

1 and 2 ... Have the Vacuum Port to the Left
3 and 4 ... Have the Vacuum Port to the Right.

1 and 2 ... are shaped to the Left for centering.
3 and 4 ... are shaped to the Right for centering.

    Please look on your bike.
To the left of the top of the Clutch Cover.
There should be the Factory Engine Stamp on the flat of the case ... straight down below the Carb bowls.

    What's stamped there?
Does it match the numbers Stamped into the Headset?

Re: Boots..For the love of parts identification...I need hel

Well, had the wife read #'s that she could make out, and she replied like so:

wifey: on the right hand side I found this number
    wifey: 5N8-015021

wifey: on the sticker I could see from the left (if I moved aside a little tube to read the end of it) I found these numbers:
    wifey: 4H7-81800-50
    wifey: and 0280007040

5N8-015021 is the same number as on the fork(right side)

So, should I take that to mean, the numbers do indeed match?

Guess I'll have to wait till I get home, since there seems to be two setrs of numbers on the engine..

man, this is starting to annoy me..

Even the "Old Bike Barn" site shows boots with ALL TUBES pointing one direction.

    grrrr

The number stamped on the right hand side of the frame and the number stamped on the engine are the same, matched set!

From the XJCD your serial number matches a 1982 XJ6550J.

Re: Boots..For the love of parts identification...I need hel

I have an xj650j, the # on the motor starts 5n8- xxxxx is different than what has been posted here.

The only hose coming from the boots is on the inside right boot. the other 3 are capped off.

I was considering replacing my intake boots(joints) as well, because they are cracked too. But after reading the post about them just being surface cracks, I will tear my down and inspect the insides of the boots.

ok, so you appear to have the EXACT boot pattern I need.
    now:
Your profile indicates you have the same bike I do..
    an 82'

Can you tell me how you ordered your boots?
    From where?
Because, noone can seem to match up my "offset" tube thingies...
