I just got me an 82 xj750. Its got 39K on it. Road it about 200 miles already and love it. Of course it needs a lot of work and I found this forum looking for some help on fixing stuff on it. Its been a lot of help so far.
Previous owner did some work on the carb and messed it up pretty bad. Just replaced the fork seals and put new brushes on the starter and many many more things to do. Its gonna be fun working on it!

Looks to be in decent shape, welcome to the board.
There is a litany of maintenance items that will need to be addressed before you put too many road miles on the bike. First off, check your valves, make sure they are in spec. Secondly, check the manufacturers date on the front brake lines and replace them if they are more than two to four years old. Thirdly, inspect and replace as necessary the rear brake shoes. For good measure, replace them no matter what condition they are in.
As you have probably found if you have spent any time on this board looking through carb threads, there is a lot of focus put on the carbs of these bikes. Search out the Church of Clean thread, read it and follow it to a "T", and you will have the confidence of knowing that your carbs are clean and set up properly so you won't have any problems with them.
    Good luck.

    Welcome !!

additionally, tire date code check. Tires dry out
Rubber dries out, and your whole front brake system contains many rubber parts.
Plan on getting a master cyl and caliper rebuild kits from Chacal.

Welcome to the club. Start a log book. As advised, get the valves in spec and do a compression test. You need to know for certain the mill is in good shape.
