Untitled.png Working on reassembling my XJ900 after reconditioning all working parts and have come across a small problem with the rear shock mount on the rear drive unit.

The mounting bolt is firmly fixed/pressed into the rear drive unit. I purchased new rubber bushes from IKON (nee Koni) which fit perfectly for 3 out of the 4 mounting points. They all have metal inserts manufactured into them.

However, on the final drive unit the mounting bolt has a greater diameter (approx 20mm) and when I dismantled the shocks initially it seems that the lower shock mount only had a rubber bushing.

Is this correct. And, if I draw a blank with local manufacturer IKON, where do I look for the appropriate rubber bushing mount for the lower rear left shock mount?

IIRC, you just pull the metal insert out of the rubber, then it should slide on. But, if need be...I'll go take a look at some of mine. I only have 5 of them------

Thanks for the reply. I did an experiment with one of the old rubber bushes (with metal insert) and tried to extract it using a couple of suitable socket sizes and a bolt to pull it through. Not so easy. They are bonded on but I presume maybe a newer one (which I have) might be able to have the metal extracted a little more easily. Will give it a go. From this I guess you're saying that the large diameter rod on the rear drive unit is factory fitted and bonded in place? Or was it like all the others except age and rust has bonded it on...?

If you tried to pull an old one apart, yes....it's probably stuck. I normally push it out. I'll have to check my others though....

You know what? I kept thinking something doesn't look right in the pic..... I just got ready to head out to the stable and take a few looks, but had a thought---- came back to look at the pic again........ I was right !!!!

Here's your problem..... Your shock bushing is still on the stud!! Look CLOSELY and you'll see. When you pulled your shock off, the metal bushing stuck to the shaft!! I'd recommend getting that off of there so you can clean and grease it so it can pivot again. If you can't get that off, the whole thing should unscrew, and you can put a good one in.

Here's how it should look ( ignore the rust/dirt/

Thanks. I've tried a bit of heat on it to loosen it but no go. From what I gather you're saying is that the internal threaded stud is actually screwed into the rear drive housing? I'll have another go to see if I can loosen it. If not I might need to take it to the local shop to get the blowtorch onto it to see if that'll loosen it.

Thanks for the feedback. It's hard to know with these things by looking whether it's pressed in at the factory, rusted on over the top of the stud or whatever...!?

    Oh well...back to the grind...
    Cheers.

Well, I've unscrewed them from other rear ends, I assume this would be the same.....I guess it's possible that these were pressed in or cast in instead-------though i doubt it

    >back to the grind.........

That would be the next cheapest thing! Grind the ring with a dremel and split it off!

Thanks again... If subtlety doesn't work...try a more powerful tool.

More heat and then see if the Dremel needs to have a go. Thanks for the pic. Makes me feel a bit better about it not being pressed into the housing. Been down that road once before trying to remove a bolt/stud only to find that it's not mounted in a way that you thought!

Cheers. Hugely helpful on such a small but frustrating matter.

Project Café Black pics up soon.

Soak it in Kroil, then careful heat. If it doesn't budge, l'd split the bushing, heat IT to expand it a bit then work it off the stud.

If you still can't get it, I'll see about pulling one just to try and verify threaded or not......

BTW, the ones I've removed were normal thread direction, too, not reversed.

Excellent. Helps to know that a) I'm not tightening the bolt by a sneaky reverse thread, or b) trying to unscrew something that's pressed in place!

Im optimistic now about a good outcome. Will feedback results soon.

Well...after more coffee, a blowtorch, persistence, a dremel, more heat, WD40, a hammer and old screwdriver...the sleeve finally gave way. See attached pic.

Thanks very much for your good advice.

    Cheers.

Indeed. Caffeine my drug of choice. Construction phase pics of my XJ900 coming soon. Just got frame back from powdercoaters. Most parts reconditioned including primary chain guide, starter clutch, cam chain, starter motor, alternator, wiring loom cleaned and all connections cleaned or renewed. This exercise with the left rear shock bushes was probably the last dismantling/refurbishing exercise. And this site is surely helpful with unforeseen problems that can't be solved by the Haynes manual alone!

Caffeine, and sugar are my two drugs of choice, too.....

Too bad that caffeine, according to some, stunts one's growth. that's too bad..........at just under 6'3", I wonder how tall I would have been!!

I drink my fair share of coffee. It's hard on the kidneys. Imo drink a quart of cranberry juice once a month. It'll help and you'll feel better. The fact that i smoke doesn't tho. Ride on brotheren and sisteren, ride on.

@ Shank....it won't be long now. Varoom, varoom!

I drink a lot of coffee and I'm 6'2" with a 36" inseam. But I blame my mom for my stature. She kicked me in the arse so many times that I had to have longer legs to reach the ground.
