Wow..... So $225.00 for the fork seals job, $110 for a solenoid,
Then only $75 for the brake pads (but they DIDN'T charge labor on that?!?)

and for the $ in the carbs I hope you have an itemized list of what they really did with them. I hope it wasn't just a $300 can of carb spray.

I get real suspicious of repair places that can't even spell BRAKE or SOLENOID correctly.

So, without the odometer working , any idea how many miles are REALLY on the bike?

When was the last time the shim clearances were checked? The carb r/r may have been in vain----

Do you have the matching-color side covers and tail to go with the tank/ front fender color---if not, why are they painted black?

Are you interested in the bike or do you just like criticizing? Obviously, the mechanic does not have a command of spelling the English language. He's a good friend and a good mechanic. He did a good job on the carbs. I've never actually seen an invoice that spelled out what one does for a Carb rebuild. The last estimate I got said, "Carb rebuild kit and carb rebuild $400." I don't know where you live but in So. Cal. everything costs a little more. (Gas is usually $4.00 a gallon, the average house costs $450,000, etc.) I am guessing the bike has close to 30,000 miles . I don't know what a shim clearance is and the two bike shops I went to, neither of them mentioned shim clearances. I'm not a mechanic. Maybe you should open up your own shop in So. Cal. The side covers were painted black by someone during the last 32 years. It wasn't me. The bike is worth $1,500 given the area (So. Cal.)

I think what he is getting at is there is a lot involved in saying that an XJ series bike is in "good running condition". Also, there is typically a great deal of difference in what a shop might do to get that bike running and out the door vs what a diligent owner would do, knowing it is their butt in the saddle 200 miles from home. Considering that they don't know what "shim clearances" means, which is a term relevant to any and every four stroke internal combustion engine whether it be in an automobile, motorcycle or boat, should give one pause when bragging about what said mechanic did when working on your machine.
    Check and adjust shims.
    Thoroughly clean and tune carbs
    Brakes
    Suspension
    Tires.
    Electrical (if there are faults)

If it is worth that in SoCal, go for it. Hopefully the new owner joins up here and we can help him if anything was overlooked.

    Good luck.

what the others are trying to say is that bike shops usually do as little as possible and some have actually charged large amounts for using a can of carb cleaner and calling it a complete rebuild. when in reality just the necessary parts for a xj carb rebuild cost $250 or more. the "shim clearance" everyone is referring to is actually the valve clearance. on our bikes the valves are adjusted using shims. the valves should be checked and adjusted every 5,000 miles. if they are out of spec, it is impossible to properly tune these bikes. hope this helps.

Look. 99% of the time when you buy a bike, the guy says that "XYZ was done, replaced, repaired, cleaned, etc." But he doesn't have receipts. I repeat, when you buy a used bike and the guy says he did work on it he rarely if ever has receipts or invoices for what he claims to have done. Now, I included the invoice in my add because I just had some work done on the bike. I spent $710 and all you dickheads can do is criticize the invoice and the mechanic. Did he do this did he do that?

Here's another estimate (invoice), for $814. I went with the $710 guy because it was cheaper. For all of you dickheads, I'm sorry I even included the invoices. Please call these mechanics and talk to them. I'm just a guy who spent a lot of money on a bike before selling it because I don't like to sell junk. So f*** all of you!

Well, since you typed it in bold you must be serious...

Calm down fella, and keep the name calling to a minimum, or rather not at all. No one has called you anything, we have merely pointed out that what the mechanic did may not be the final steps to ensure the bike is running correctly. Running yes, that's easy. Running right is a different and more involved process. I don't disagree that it is a more honest mentality to sell a bike that has had work done to it rather than leave the service undone for the next guy, I do the same thing. Go look how many people sell Ducatis within 250 miles of needing their next (expensive) service.

Again, good luck with the sale.

To answer your shim question. Here is what the mechanic wrote:

"There is no shim clearance on carbs. That's a term for valves. The carbs butterflies have been synched."

The valve shims in the engine need to be checked and within spec, otherwise tuning the rebuilt carbs is an exercise in futility. Out of spec valves mean the intake/exhaust is not optimized, which means that final adjustment of the carbs will be wrong because the intake valve is wrong, capiche? The intake is not drawing the correct fuel/air mixture through it from the carbs, which means the carbs will be adjusted to compensate for that error rather than flowing the proper amount.

I'm not criticizing. Just noting. Nope, not interested.... I have 4 750 secas already.

If they don't know about putting the valve clearances back in spec before doing a carb rebuild, that's a concern.....

Coming in as a new member, and trying to sell us a bike that we already know more about than your mechanic..... Then calling us names because we ask about, or point out, things that could be cause for concern is not really the best way to
Go about it. But that's my opinion.

Carry on, good luck with your sale.
