So I figured I would take the mirror off while I rebuild the master cylinder. Took the mirror off the top. Then I tried to take the rod out of the master cylinder side. Dumb move. It just broke the bolt end off. I know I can drill the piece in the master cylinder side out.
Did they use a threaded rod on the rod/stand off side? Or is it made part of it. Just wondering if I can drill and easy out that side also?

it's threaded; and just in case, recall that Yamaha mirrors are reverse (left-handed) threaded on the right (when sitting on the bike) side mirror post and also in the master cylinder mirror post mounting hole meaning that they tighten by turning counter-clockwise

Correct.... Reverse-thread on the master-cylinder side. That way, if you catch a tree branch, or deer...... Or car mirror----- on either side of the bike, the mirror post can spin away by rotating toward the back of the bike rather than breaking off.

That explains why a totaled bike can have such nice mirrors...

Good to know they are reverse threaded. Wish I had known this before I tried to take it off.
Guess I will drill them out with a right hand drill. But where to find a reverse easy out and threaded rod. Or does someone sell that reverse stud?
    Thanks guys

Stormin, after you get the busted post out (I have confidence in you), you'll need some new mirrors. I have a set of used mirrors laying around that I can give you that I'm fairly certain will work. They worked on my Maxim-X & I'm pretty sure they are the same thread size and if I'm not mistaken the 1981 650's had rectangular mirrors (need some XJ-wizard confirmation here). Let me know if you're interested and I can get them to you.
how far are you from Utica ;-)

This stinks, as I need so much to get this bike back in shape, and I go and break more. But I guess I still have a few months before spring.

Off topic but, how does the brake switch come out. Before I turn it the wrong way. Manual says it's just pushed in.

Yes, those mirrors are what he needs. An option would be to include them in a package coming this way , then I could relay them on and that would cut down on shipping----- maybe that's what you were already thinking ..... Lol

    Stormin,

The brake light switch is just "pushed in". On the bottom of the Master Cyl. there's a small hole where the switch goes in. Take a straightened out paper clip and depress the spring loaded button to release the tension and simultaneously twist and pull the switch out.

BTW, I'm probably closer to you than hogfiddles, as I'm in the New Haven CT area. However, I don't have any stock style mirrors to offer.

Dave; it crossed my mind! I will cut out the middle man and send Stormin' the mirrors directly. 'Tis the Season, and I'm in the giving mood.

Regarding the package coming your way, it looks like the riding season is done; snow on the ground - so I will get it together for you. One more trip to Lyon FR on Saturday, so it will be a week or so....

I was thinking I should have just drilled and taped the remaining stud with a regular right hand thread put a bolt in and just tightened it to loosen the left hand thread. I think I drilled to much out to do that now

Well that didn't work. Taped it to 5/16" 18. Broke the bolt off it it. LoL.
That dang thing is in there.
I didn't try and just turn it. I kept tapping it.
    Drilling it out again.

Took the master cylinder apart today. I figured I would not be a happy camper doing this as the piston was pretty hard to move with the handle.
Used a punch to tap the piston down so I could get the snap ring out. Took the snap ring out and then tapped the piston back a little then back in. Did this a couple times and it loosened up and the spring was pushing it up. Grabbed onto the piston wit small pliers and twisted it and out it came. Nice grey paste inside but wiped right out of the bore. Also ran a small wire through the tiny return hole . It was clean.
Time to break out the brake cleaner and wash it all out. Then wait for my parts to show up.
Anybody had any luck painting the master cylinder and brake lever?
Now to get that mirror stud out.

Surprised the remaining mirror stud is still in there? Suppose the combination of dissimilar metals and moisture settling in over the years is proving to be a challenge. Once you get it ready to twist out again, you may want to try heating it up with a small propane torch and then cool it quickly with a shot of cold water. That will shock the two surfaces and hopefully relieve the bond.

I've used semi-gloss engine enamel to freshen up the paint on mine. And, while you're at it, hit up Chacal for a new sight glass. Replace that too and the end result will be well worth all the trouble you're going through.

    Thanks.
I'll try the heating and cooling trick next. Wanted to get the piston out before I tried any heat.
Have to order a sight glass and still need to order the brake lines and the front brakes will be all set. Already ordered brake pads, rebuild kits for master cylinder and caliper.

Note: also purchase/install new copper crush washers at brake line connections. There's a thread about possibly heating and re-using the old ones (i can't remember where it is).

Steve. The mirrors showed up last night. Thank you . Those are some nice mirrors.
Interesting that they changed the design along the way and put hollow studs in. Mine were solid

Something to remember: Left hand threads are identified by check marks on the surface the wrench mates. I know that was worded strange but its hard to put into words. Take a look at the gas fitting on a gas grill. You can also see the marks in the picture posted earlier in this post.
