    Hi guys!

I would like to help me about choose a small tank for my 1983 Yamaha XJ 900 F.
The chassis of the XJ is almost equal to 650/750/900 especially in the area where the tank is placed.

I'm looking for a small tank (no bobber style) to transform my XJ to scrambler / street tracker.

I need to know if you know of any tank that will fit in the chassis of my XJ 900 F.

I will associate you two examples. One I like (A) and the other I do not (B):

XS or XT would be my first ones to look at.

Small, narrow tanks don't fit unless you cut the frame.

Put the bottom pan of the tank on your frame.
Put wet sand on the pan and shape it.
Cover the sand with aluminium foil or cloth
    Coat with fiberglass
Blend and attach the fiberglass shell to the steel pan

Now you have your own tank that you made.

Sorry for not responding to this! That's my bike with that tank.

Yes, the tank will fit with a little hammering of the insides at the front of the tunnel, which needs to be done so that the front mounts will fit on the xj frame mounts.

You will need to remove the rubber mounts that come stock on the xj (both front and back, but I'm referring to the front here) so that the mounts will fit.

At this point, the tank sits pretty far forward and the fork tubes will hit it. There is a medium though, and since I will need to modify the mounts with rubber (essentially scooting it back a bit), I think I will be happy with it, and it's better than the bars hitting it IMO. (I have drag bars and they do not touch it).

A rear mount will definitely need welded, and for it to look clean, your seat pan will need to be custom fiberglassed to meet the tank and cover the new mount.

Finally, you'll either have to move the petcock forward with some welding, or you can do what I will do: clamped hose directly to the bung, then to some sort of reducer which clips on to an inline fuel valve, then to an inline fuel filter (especially since there is now nothing in the petcock to filter). Otherwise the petcock will sit on carb hat number one.

So, does it fit around the frame and also use the stock front mounts? Yep! But it still takes a crapton of work if you don't want it to look like an afterthought.

Let me know if you have anymore specific questions!

    Happy holidays.

I get the idea behind the photoshopped exhaust, but...umm...... Its going to be a bit wide, and even a heat shield may not keep your leg from getting toasty. You're also shrouding the cooling fins quite a bit.
