Looks like I lost another speedo drive. I don't mean I lost it, I know where it is, but it stopped working again. This one was used from ebay. Is there a rebuild kit? You guys would know!

Pull the new-used one apart, clean out the old grease, and put in new grease before fitting it to the bike. The drive ears I'm talking about engage the wheel at the wheel hub.

Gotta be something wrong in the hub. I know I lined up the 'ears'. So, I dislodged the cable from the drive unit and hooked up a drill to the cable and put the drill in reverse, watched the speedo, it works. I dislodged the cable at the speedo and went for a ride and the cable is not turning. This speedo drive just came in, all the splines/gears look fine. The old one looked fine too. speedo4.jpg speedo3.jpg

It seems that the little piece, with the ears?, in the hub isn't locked up to the wheel, if that makes sense. I can turn it by hand. When I dislodge the speedo cable from the speedometer I can turn it by hand, even when it's pushed all the way into the sheath. Seems to me that it shouldn't turn unless the wheel is turning.

Hears a thought if you you haven't tried it yet.Remove the speedo cable and the hub from your bike then connect the cable to the hub, then rotate the gears on the hub and see if the cable turns. Might be possible both gear are gone in both hubs.

The new/used speedo drive and the old one both will turn the cable. WHEN it's off the bike. The piece in the wheel hub is NOT engaging the speedo drive. I don't know what the piece is called. But the 'ears' on it, as described by K-moe, even though lined up correctly with speedo drive, doesn't engage the drive. Spinning free on the hub?

Measure the ears and make sure they are sticking out far enough..... Look close and see if they've been bent in down at the bottoms of the tangs. Sometimes they get bent by being "pushed straight back" rather than being bent over. It is possible that the tips have been worn down, and it's also possible that the tab that keeps it oriented is worn so that is slips around in the groove---

here's the culprit. You can see it's all bent up. Gonna try to straighten it, but..... speedo doohickey.jpg
