    Hi everyone,
I'm hoping to start my 82 Maxim XJ650 today after replacing a head gasket. But there are two wires that stick out of the part of harness on the left side bottom. That part of the harness feeds into the cover for the timing. But these two wires are underneath the shifter. I think the blue one (you can barely see it in the photo because the end is broken off) is a ground and probably just attaches to the engine case, but because its blue I want to see if anyone knows for sure. With the key on and the switch on run, when I touch that wire to ground, the green ignition light comes on. So I think I'm right about it being a ground. The female (for lack of a better term) connector near it, I think connects to nothing. Anyone know? I think maybe it's for an accessory that didn't come on my model. Is my speculation about these wires right?
Thanks for the advice. I think this is my last obstacle to starting my bike again and if someone can help me you'll be making all my dreams come true.

Okay, since posting this I figured out that the black connector plugged into the oil level sensor in the bottom of the crankcase. We soldered the end back on. With the ignition and switch on the green light doesnt come on. But with them both on I touch that wire to ground and something clicks and the light comes on. Has to be a ground. But where to?

The blue wire goes to the neutral switch. It points down from the crankcase under the shift shaft and behind the pipe. Hard to get to .

The black wire with the red stripe goes to the oil level switch.

Also the blue neutral wire should locate via a small hidden screw in a recessessed cavity. The black wire should locate via a bullet connector to the oil level switch.

Thank you guys. I figured out that the blue one was something for the neutral switch but I wouldn't have ever found where it went! I grounded it and after starting the bike the green light stays on - so I figured out that I was wrong to ground it and that it has to go to the neutral switch somewhere.
On another note - sadly, after replacing the head gasket and making it all nice and clean and fixing a few other odds and ends- now I have oil leaking from the cylinder jugs through a crack in the aluminum. It must have been plugged up with JB Weld or something and during the process of cleaning it I undid the patchwork without knowing it. So, not quite done yet. I'm going to try to JB weld it again from the outside. If that doesn't work I have to rip it apart again. I have to say though, that it has never run this good. Once I solve the oil leak this bike is going to be really nice.
