im looking to put pod air filters on my xj550 and remove the air box. I'm measuring the outside diameter of the carb at 50 mm but everything I see online is saying they are 54 mm. Can someone tell me which one is correct?

50mm sound more like it, my BS32s (off xj600) are 'only' 53mm - I just measured for curiosity. So the BS28s will be smaller
    than that.

I would like to apologise in advance for all the trouble you are about to deal with. Sometimes stock is better.

I would have to agree, this stock xj550 seca I am riding is a bullet! I couldn't imagine messing it up with pods and aftermarket or chopped up exhaust. don't forget folks, there is a direct relationship between the intake and exhaust. the engineers that built them know way more about it and have done their math.

I just measured the inside diameter of the carb holder (air box side) and its 50mm. It's a old carb holder so don't take my word for sure. But that's what I got. It's your bike do what you want to it. I would save all original parts just in case....

I know it's not gonna run like a stock but it's my first build and I'm using it as a learning experience. I've already learned a lot but I've got much much much more to learn.

Just take care to not do anything that can't be undone. The 550 is well on its way to being collectable.

Ditto. I was young once and thought pods, hollowed out mufflers, straight pipes, drilled jets, etc. would be awesome. Now I pass over bikes that are modified and hacked, and spend lots of time looking for original parts on my project bikes. Here is an old article from a Mikuni engineer, its good read for anyone that is thinking about some mods.

I had the fortune of picking up a running 1975 Z1 900 super cheap when I was younger, that unfortunately was my "learning" bike. Put pods and pipes on it. I'll bet money that my KZ750 will waste that bike now the way I had it set up. Sure looked purty though.

Well I'm waaaaaay past stock anyways. I hardtailed it and I'm getting it back together now. I wish you guys could have seen this thing before I started with it.....the whole ass end was trash. Frame was rusted and everything. Here's the latest picture I've got of it

Just realized I also posted on your hardtail/bobber thread. Looking good and yeah, that's not going back to stock easily. There are people that have gotten satisfactory results with modified intake exhaust sets. Barebones rides did a really nice XJ650 bobber. The guys there are super friendly, I was emailing back and forth with them for awhile on a project.

If you need help on the jetting/tuning, they work with another company (names escapes me right now) that can make you a custom jet set for the carb based on your intake, exhaust, and engine mods. Comes with detailed instructions too. Shoot them a message if you're interested and they'll hook you up.

Frames are easier than engines. IF you really want that look then go for the pods, but you will be making a trade-off. Poke around here and you will find a thread about tuning with pods, and a few threads where people have made alternative airboxes. Some of them work better than pods, and look pretty good.

If you're not going to use the airbox, I'd be interested in it if you pull it out unmolested.
