i just installed new valve shims and they were seated pretty well so I removed the cams. Now I need to create some slack in the cam chain to reinstall the sprockets but the tensioner doesn't want to retract. I first loosened the bolt behind the head then just finally removed it with the spring. I don't see and release mechanism to push that arm back. Anyone ideas?

Not sure about the 750 but on my 900, if it's the same, you have to remove the whole cam tensioner unit from the back of the engine underneath the carbs and press a small button to retract the plunger.

Then reinstall the unit with a new gasket and when ready reinstall the spring mechanism and bolt it in place, which will then push the plunger into a position where it will create tension on the cam chain tensioner.

Not a big job but it is a bugger to squeeze in underneath the carbs to remove it.

Someone else may have a suggestion on how to release the tension on the tensioner while still in the engine but from memory the little button/lever is on the underside of the unit.

    Cheers.

I wondered about that. You are right. Nearly impossible to reach without removing the carbs. Thanks!

From memory you can extract it without removing the carbs but be prepared with a good expletive laden vocabulary and skinned knuckles.

    Good luck!

Took off the carbs - removed the two hex bolts and got it out. Thanks!
