I've searched the forum long and hard for this info, but to no avail...

I'm not exactly sure where to post this, but "technically" speaking, can anyone tell me which gas tanks from which models and years can fit a 1985 XJ700 Maxim (not water-cooled) without modification? I just want more options to choose from, and to hopefully find a NOS tank. Clean, easy.

I'm not looking for a larger tank. Mine is extremely rusted after sitting since 2008, with chunks big enough to interfere with the petcock's closure. Chunks, nasty.

    Thanks for the help.

The tanks are identical for the 1985/1986 xj700/750/700X/750X only. The California tanks will work as long as you either have the calif emissions equipment, or you close off the tube and swap to a vented cap.

No other years or models will swap without modding.

    Bad news, but thanks.

Any ideas if there is any NOS anywhere, or aftermarket? Basically, my in-tank filter is busted, and my tank is filled with rust. Not a good combo! I've tried derusting my thank, and using an inline filter, but it's just too hard to clean these damn tanks and worse to try to flush them out. Rust chunks messing up my petcock... and everywhere else gas goes.

I'd love to buy a good tank for $125 or so, but everything on eBay is worse than the tank I have. Doubtful, but fingers crossed.

Have you used a phosphoric acid wash to clean the tank?

Handful of small screws shaken around in the tank for an hour or so to remove the large rust particles, followed by electrolysis or a phosphoric acid flush, followed by a good liner will solve those problems.

You won't be able to buy a GOOD tank for an 85/86 for that kind of price (at least not very easily). Maybe double to triple that for a GOOD one, and a whole lot more for a pristine one.

But then again, who knows......the deals are out there and you might be the lucky one to find it.

Thanks for the replies. To clarify, I'm not asking about methods of tank cleaning. If anyone knows of where to get a decent tank, please let me know!

    Thanks again.

    len (chacal) has nos tanks...

HCP3116-6G OEM original steel GAS TANK, factory gloss black color, fits all XJ700 non-California models. NOTE: the gloss black finish on this tank is correct for the 1985 XJ700N, 1986 XJ700XS models, and XJ750-X models. Bare tank does not include the gas cap, petcock, or any mounting hardware or bushings. NOTE: can be used on California models, but do not have the port for the use of the rollover valve.
