I just purchased a tank off ebay and the seller also has a fuel sending unit for sale which means this tank has the cutout for it. Can I get an aftermarket or OEM fuel gauge somewhere? Would there be anything other than the wiring I would have to worry about?

the fuel sender unit in the tank ,and the fuel guage are matched,
however you can measure the "ohmic value" of the sender using a multimeter , then obtain a matching guage.
    hope that helps

oh, and for most motorcycles, the ohmic value of the sender is usually either 100 ohms, 250 ohms or 510 ohms.
most xjs are 510 ohm, that's zero on empty , 510 ohms when full,

Thanks guys. k-moe that is just the thing I need. Thanks for that awesome link. Once I get the bike back together I'll try my hand at building one of those.
