Do I sync the carbs first or adjust the idle air screws (with color tune) first?
Seems like they would both effect each other....

They do affect each other, but the sync is the biggie. Sync first, set mixture, check sync.

agreed with MiCarl. If it took some doing to get it dialed in, then I'd run it for a couple days and then do it again.

You must, at least, set the PMS to factory default.

But I believe Mike had been riding for awhile already and I'm assuming its just time for a little tuneup. If he had been asking about doing that after a carb cleaning job that would have been the first thing mentioned along with getting clearances back in spec

    PMS?
Hogfiddles is correct, the bike had been running, carbs were cleaned about six months ago but not synced (just bench sync) at that time.
This time I adjusted the valves and decided it would be a good time to really sync the carbs....and I just bought a colortune plug so I wanted to get the Idle Air Screws set right too.

    PMS-primary mixture screw

However, it should more correctly be:
    IMS-idle mixture screw.

Yep.... Bench sync, mixture screws at about 2.5 turns out for base setting ( I turn them 1/8 turn more out) have not had to change them as the colortune has always been blue right there---

Then running sync, colortune, running sync again if it feels like it is needed, and another colortune , too, if you feel it's needed. They go pretty much hand-in-hand

That too..... Either way, it's still the idle mixture screw:) ( or just "mixture screw")

As it turned out the colortune was a nice blue with the based settings (after sync) and it runs great.
This was my first time using the colortune and I have to say I'm not as imptessed with it as I hoped. I got quite a bit of arcing between the electroded and the outer part of the plug....but it was arcing above the sight glass so the cylinder was not firing when that happened. I also had a hard time getting it to work consistently at idle. Sometimes there was just no color...as if that cylinder was dead. I know all my cylinders are all firing because it idles well and if you individually pull a plug wire it is obvious when you drop a cylinder. But with the colortune I just had a lot more funky results than I had anticpated.
Is this typical or do I have a defective colortune plug?

You got a bad unit. Mine works perfectly. I would contact the vendor you purchased it from.

You learn something new every day. I thought PMS had to do with my wife.
Imagine that, a motorcycle has it, too. Explains why, once a month, the Maxim gets really ornery.
