Anyone recognise these bits?

Just picked up the bottom end of my XJ900 engine from the local engineering shop after they removed a broken stud for me. On returning home, I looked down between cylinders 2 and 3 and noticed lots of little bits and on removing the sump found the bits seen in the picture below along with some oil. Now I'm confused as the engine has been on its side before and I though all the oil had drained out.

The engineering shop have confirmed that they just applied heat and welded a nut to remove the stud so its unlikely to have resulted from that but the pieces seem to be a mix of small roller bearings circa 3mm, one ball bearing, some hardened black plastic and three -four pieces what appears to be similar to a cog on an old watch as they are sort of circular and appear to have small teeth.

Can anyone point me in the direction of where to look first?

Unfortunately, none of my educated guesses are good.... Primary chain guide is a partial possibility. Doesnt explain the bearings though...

Was this a running plant before you took it to the shop?

Hopefully something just fell down in it while it was open...

Thanks for the suggestions - a bit more searching with a torch and a review of the workshop manual and I think it may be a combination of: -
    (i) bits of the hardenend rubber from the studs when I removed the head/barrels, and
(ii) the roller bearings match those in the clutch thrust bearing and the shards of metal could be part of the same

When I checked the clutch plates they were as new and I suspect that the bearing destroyed itself and was replaced along with the plates. Still missing 6-7 rollers if that is the case.

Engine was running when I bought the bike with no unusal sounds but I went straight into the strip down.

Does anyone know if there is a bearing similar to the clutch one anywhere else in the engine?

Not with that size of roller.

Maybe a shop that wanted you to come back for some major engine work soon?
