brought home a new to me 85 xj700 maxim and it needs some tlc. i have the forks off now replacing the seals and have some questions about cleaning. what should i use to clean the inside and how should i do it. i want to get all or most of the old fork oil out of both tubes to ensure the new seals stay good for as long as possible. the previous seals were so bad they seized themselves to the inner fork needless to say they were a pain to get off. also the circlips have broken from rusting can i purchase the clips by themselves? found some clips however they say that they are for a fj 1200 will they fit these forks? thanks for any help you guys can offer.

As noob said chacal is the man around here for parts. I also have an 85 700 and they are worth making road worthy.

Chacal is the guy for parts, as mentioned above.

I use brake cleaner by the case. It is good for cleaning. I recommend getting some aircraft stripper (be careful!) and strip off the crappy clearcoat on the fork lowers while they are apart.... then buff those bad boys up, or spray with caliper paint.

Don't forget the important stuff. Check your rear brakes for delamination, tires, your carbs need cleaned/rebuilt, probably need a front brake overhaul too...

Since you have the forks apart, it would be a good time to upgrade to Progressive fork springs. Did you have trouble getting the bolts out of the bottom?

Trust me.... the progressive fork springs and 15 wt fork oil are WELL worth it.

It is usually a given that assembly is the reverse of disassembly unless specified.
