I don’t remember when I find this site. I remember that searching info about pilot screws adjustment…
I bought a 1983 XJ 400 about 3 years ago. The bike was in not good condition, but after repairing and some customizing it runs good.

Never got to Kiev, the Marines sent me to Feodosiya last year. That was... interesting.

So, about 400 ccm and 550 ccm Seca models. There are only couple visible differences between Japanese XJ400 and USA’s XJ550:
- XJ400 has two front brake discs
- XJ400’s original exhaust system can be 4in4 or 4in2 (as XJ550’s exhaust)
And there are next differences inside motors: crankshaft, pistons, piston rings and cylinder. As I know, all rest is identical.

If it’s interesting to you… List of non original or custom parts and additional gauges, used in my bike:

- Exhaust system (With parts of original one and self-made mufflers). It was made by previous owner.
- Rear shocks (I don’t know from what bike they are).
- Handlebar, handlebar weights, blinkers, rear-view mirrors, windshield.
- XJ550’s luggage rack modified to be used with monokey 21-liter Givi E21/Kappa K21 cases.
- Crash bars.
- Oil cooler from XJ550 4V8 (model for Germany).
- Oil-pressure gauge, oil-temperature gauge.
- Bike Computer BC600 (in addition to main speedometer)

Unfortunately, we Yanks never got to enjoy the XJ400. What a shame.

Our "bigger is better" mindset prevents a lot of nice machinery from ever being offered here, or kills it after a year or two.

So there really is an Xj400 with 4 cylinders. I once told this to a dealer and they basically told me I was a young punk that didn't know what the f*** I was talking about.

The model I had mistaken for an xj400 was actually an xs400. It was a 2-cylinder model. The picture I had seen in the advertisement showed it from the side and there was no way I could tell the difference. The dealer told me that there was no such thing as a 400cc 4-cyl Yamaha. They basically talked down to me like I was an idiot, a stupid young punk who had wasted their time... etc etc. They even followed me out into the parking lot back to my car so they could confirm what I thought I was really looking for (from the advertisement).
They listed the bike incorrectly on Bike Trader and should get their shit straight!, not blame me for it.

That's those a*****s at Northern Motorsports near Toronto ON. One that frequents the bike trader with many over priced motorcycles.

Are these guages actual guages or just lights that come on when there's a problem? I would be interested in seeing how the gauges are hooked up and where they are mounted on your bike.

 

Nice bike, I have known about the 4cylinder 400cc Yamahas since they were kicking my but in Okinawa in 1982. They were beautiful bikes then as yours is now. I opted for the Kawasaki kz400 Four to combat them at that time. I was young then, My only excuse.

Sorry I haven’t written in so long. Been busy with work and replacing wheel bearings and tires.

Ukrainian dealer has never heard of 700-750 ccm XJ Maxim X for example
And dealer has no part list for my bike. I’m using XJ550 part numbers to order parts for my XJ400…

They are actual gauges and display current oil temperature and pressure. I’ll make few photos of gauges this week.

Arrgh, Gazzz, did you have to post that beautiful picture -- now I have bike AND location envy!! :wink:

Couldn't help but notice the tread on the front tire -- are you sure it's mounted the right direction? Looks like the tread should go the other way to shed water. Just a thought...

Thanks, but I’m 100% sure that it's mounted in the right direction. In addition, this tyre is for front wheel use only and has arrow which point rotation.
