I recently bought my second maxim, and it is my first 1100. It ran when i bought it but needed its fix of ether to fire. So i did what we all do, i waited till the snow started flying, and pulled my carbs. I gave them the typical once over, being sure not to miss any enrichment circuit as i suspected that as my problem. Once i removed the float bowls i noticed one of my main jets was lower than the rest. Upon inspection i realized i was missing a spacer. Once i removed the jet i found why. The threads on the jet were broken and wouldnt grab with the spacer in place. Can i adjust float height to compensate or am i bound for a jet kit?

She still runs good 1/4 throttle and up.

That's not a spacer, it's a sealing washer. You should have it there.

Pop for a new jet and washer (not a kit). XJ4EVER should be able to help you out.

BTW, that is not the reason it is hard to start. It's likely starting hard because the starter jets (in the bottom of the bowl) are clogged. Your mention of it being great above 1/4 throttle leads me to believe it's not below 1/4 - that will be your idle (pilot) circuit. Do a proper cleaning while you're in there.

I would suggest throttle shaft seals too. They are commonly neglected, and a source of major headaches too.

Also goes without saying. Get your valve shims in spec too.
