I just put my bike together and cranked it. Ran nice except for the oil pouring out from under the bike. Shut it off and checked then started it again and confirmed it was from the oil filter. So I went inside ate supper took some Tylenol and sat down and thought about it. Eventually the answer cut through the depression I was experiencing. I left one of my favorite shows behind,(American Hotrod) removed the oil filter turned it around so the indention side was toward the engine and reinstalled it. Cranked it up and no leak. I have been installing these filters since I bought my Seca new in 1983. I have had my current XJ750K since 1989. I should no better by now.
Which leaves me to explain the subject line. Every problem we have is due to either ourselves or another person. We all have the same last name. If we create the problem through or own ignorance or stupidity then our first name is Dumb. If we listen to someone else who thinks they know the answer but in reality don't then their first name is Smart. If we continue to pursue the aforementioned areas knowing they haven't worked well in the past and know of other venues which coud purge the ignorance or stupidity then our first name is Jack. Can you guess the last name? My first name is Dumb , but you can call me D!

I can relate, had the puddle under my bike only the problem was the housing didn't square up with the casing for some reason!
Sure pissed me off, no depression, just anger that it could happen!

Just don't throw the large thin washer that rests against the filter out with the filter, you'll feel dumb as I did!

I noticed that neither of our xj's had that washer with the oil filter when we bought it. Is it important? They seem to run okay without it? What does it do?

Keeps the spring from buggering up the grommet, which I believe could allow unfiltered oil to wander on into the output flow. Kinda nice to have. I need a new one myself since I found the last one in my oil drain pan and misplaced it.
