So I bought an 82 xj650 January with some bad electrical problems. The wires were all botched up so I bought an 81 xj650 wiring harness. Did I make a mistake in buying it or can i use the 81 harness on my 82?

You didn't make a mistake, but you will have a few things that you'll have to rig.

    1. Possibly the kick stand switch
    2. Possible ground wire for the right hand controls
    3. As long as its Maxim to Maxim, or Seca RJ to Seca RJ, or Turbo to Turbo, you should be pretty close to ok with just little things to work out. But, if you've crossed models as well, you're in for a headache.

Keep us posted, and we'll help you work it out. That's what we're here for ..............

He'll be missing the wiring and relay socket for the side stand switch and the connection for the tachometer.

If I'm not using the original tachometer, will it matter about the connection?
And as far as those two things go, will everything else match up?

1980 and 1981 had a mechanical tach 1982 and 1983 had an electrical tach so if you're going to put a mechanical tach on it you'll need the mechanical pick-up on the head. Otherwise you will need the electrical circuit for the electrical tach.

I think the answer is yes. If you're going to use an electronic tach you'll have to put something in for that. I'm also a VERY big fan of the side stand circuit, I'd look at wiring that up too.

You should look at the electrical diagrams to confirm that it'll plug up. XJ Wiring Diagrams

If I just want to see if my bike even turns on, what do I need to have plugged in? I need the battery for sure, but what about the harness? What needs to be plugged in?
