Rule of thumb is, up 3 on the mains & up 1 on the pilots.

Nothing will have everything you need as it will take tinkering to get her running right but the Dynojet stage 3 gives you a good start. It is up to you if you want to risk drilling your slides or not though as there is no going back once the powertools come out...

    Cheers

The Dynojet kit comes with a lot of options, it's best to get some feedback from someone who has had success running the same set up as you, see what combo worked.

Here's my .02 on this subject. I have a 1982 XJ1100, with a 1196 Wiseco piston kit, stock 4-2 exhaust, stock carbs with Dynojet kit 3, changed main jets to 120.

Runs like a top, have not had to do one thing to it and runs like a champ. BTW, my elevation is 1150.

    Good luck
    Jamie

Anton how was your bike running before the mods? Have you adjusted your valves yet? Taken compression readings? I can tell you this if you can not answer these questions your in for a hard time.

I'm running what is basically an open exhaust on my '81. I've a fender washer welded in place with a 1/2" hole allowing pass-through to what would otherwise be a open exhaust. I've not re-jetted yet but need to as it has a hard time idling until at full operating temperature. Mid range transition and top-end are fine though.

I used auto parts store off-the-shelf exhaust [IMG]pieces and fully welded everything.

...this is fully welded except for where the pipes slip onto the factory exhaust past the resonant chamber. I made my own copper gaskets for the connection.

I suspect that if I up the idle jet I'll be good to go.

...once I find some heat shields that I like to cover the black engine enamel paint that I used, the exhaust will be done.

Start here: http://xjbikes.com/Forums/viewtopic/t=32118.html > Let me give you some friendly advice there are absolutely no advantages to pods. They can be made to work but like I said there are no advantages to pods just like I can put Z rated tires on my Toyota it will not make it run any faster or increase the fuel mileage I will gain no advantage by doing that. If you are going to have any success at getting your bike to run you have got to do everything thats been neglected in the past. More than likely it never had the valves adjusted you need to do this first it is an easy task once you try it you also need to test the coils and caps and pickups all you need is a simple multi-meter another easy task. You should do a compression test if the compression is no good then the bike will not perform no matter what you do. I do a compression test record the #s then valve adjust then another compression test, this lets me know if i screwed up the valve adjustment or was it bad to begin with and adjusting the valves did not help and yes I have screwed up the valve adjustments.

If you're gonna get pods and play w/ jets, get another bike to do it with. That way if you ever get it running right, you'll know what to do. In the meantime your daily ride will be just fine.

If a previous owner told you it ran just fine, he's right--- it did run fine ...... At least when it left the factory. Very few here have ever bought a bike where the previous owner says " it only ran like crap when it used to run". ( I'd be one of ones that actually HAS bought bikes in that condition though ......)

the seller of my 83 750 maxim said, "it is hard to start and runs crappy till it gets warmed up, then it runs fine". LOL!

funny story; I saw a gal at the one moto show wearing a shirt that said "it ran when I parked it" on the back. I said to her, " you know, I have read that a lot on craigslist".

I appreciate the concern, but I'm dead set on pods and open exhaust. I actually am the PO, it's kind of a weird story. Basically my bike was taken in '08 and I just got it back. It wasn't quite a basket case when I got it back, but it wasn't far from it. Anyway, airbox and exhaust are nowhere to be found, so I'm going to give this a shot.

If anyone has tried, whether it was a failure or a success, I'd love to hear about it!

i did two layers of Uni foam on the stock air cleaner frame and a mac 4/1 with a supertrapp muffler. upped the mains to 124 (750). the supertrapp is what finally got rid of the 5K stumble
