Hello! New guy to the site and honestly new to riding all together. I just picked up a 1983 midnight maxim 750 and I really want to turn it into a bobber. I haven't decided if I'm going to convert it into a hard tail or leave it a soft tail. The major thing I'm after is a solo seat already fabbed up(doesn't need cushioning or anything) and maybe some head/tail lights. But looking at everything and anything. Let me know if you have anything thanks a lot!

why don't you ride it stock for awhile before you change it all up. You'll never know what's wrong if you don't know what's right

welcome to the forum. the midnight maxims are not as common as the regular maxims. if it is in decent shape, it could be worth more than the regular maxims. also, there are a few purists on the forum that hate to see a classic bike go the way of the "bobber". but it's your bike, so do with it what you want, and don't pay any attention to anyone the may berate you for your decisions. there are plenty members here who will help you regardless.

it would be great to see some pics of said bike.

Thanks guys, you're right I don't know what's wrong with it, but honestly I don't like the stock look with the goofy seat and goofy handlebars(in my opinion) so I want to turn it into the bike that I like. For cheap.

Here's a pic of the bike right now with nothing done to it.

change the handle bars, mirrors and loose that back rest, that's easy stuff. The seat is going to open a whole can of worms. that doesn't look like a stock seat to me but it sure looks comfy

Do you mean can of worms as in a mess of wires? I'm a red seal electrician I'm not worried about the electrical aspect

Beautiful Midnight Special. I can't remember the last time I saw one so clean. The 24k and black chrome look to be in superb condition. That bike was loved.

    Good luck with it.

Just remember who owns the bike.

A lot of folks here prefer the stock bikes. It is only original once. Some changes can be undone, but once you cut the frame, it will never be original again. There. All disclaimers aside, I feel that there are improvements that can be done to the bikes... it is a 30+ year old design, and some areas look dated. Have you seen the dash on a XJ750 Seca? Plenty of room for improvements!

imho, it is better to chop up a semi neglected bike than it is to chop up a clean classic.

Go to a vintage bike show with it as is and you will get nothing but compliments. It's collector grade. It's a very rare bike in that condition that will do nothing but increase in value every year.

Nice bike. I would feel better chopping it up if it was in much worse condition. I am doing an 83 with only 3400 miles. I am doing like they say making little changes that way its a little custom and have all the stock parts. Bars and a lot of polishing is in its future in the next few weeks. Most of the maxim 750s out there are starting to look their age. Something to think about before chopping. With as nice of shape that yours is in you could always sell it find another that runs good but does not look the best buy it chop it and have a little money left over.
