finally getting around to getting my 550 maxim back together. Now I need to know what kind of chain to buy. I have a 120 link but it's still 8 inches too short and doesn't fit the sprockets. Thanks for any help in advance

Hmmm....something's really wrong, because the XJ550's only use a 104-link chain. Stock rear wheel? How many teeth are on both the front and the rear drive sprockets?

ok, then what you need to do is measure out 8 inches on your chain and count the links. then ad that number to what you already have.

Make sure you get one plenty long. It's a lot easier to cut links off than it is to stretch a short one.

Gotta love it when you aren't given the complete story, but expected to diagnose a problem.....
