I have a 1982 xj650 seca with a 4 to 1 exhaust system (bought that way). I dont know if carb work was done to it. It had been sitting for a year with out it running. The spark plugs were black and smelt like it was rich.... I added pod filters with hope to counter act the "richness"... Now it idles high and pops pops and dies... Do i need to re jet the carbs?

Yes. Better yet, put the airbox back on and adjust the idls air screws until you're no longer rich at idle.

I was told popping can also be an effect of running too lean.

It can. It can also be indicitave of an air leak.

You could be running lean, with a too rich pilot mixture.

Everything about that set up screams lean...

Make sure your jets are stock AND that they arent drilled out

Kind of. Remember.... "Got it that way from the po"....

The bike should be running lean from the 4-1, then be running even leaner from the pods... Yet, plugs indicate rich, nearly fouling...

I would expect that something was done to the carbs. Heres a couple good guesses to start...

    1. Po drilled or swapped jets
    2. Main/pilot reversed. (I did this this, with nearly identical symptoms)
    3. Po increased enrichment screws to compensate for lean mix
    4. Bad coils causing incomplete combustion.
    5. Fuel height/bad needles putting in extra fuel.

Here's a quick test. Go buy some new plugs. Warm your bike up good. Swap plugs. Go riding/let it run for a bit. Plug chop. See what you got.

Ultimately, i agree with kmoe. Your carbs need to come apart. I would also suggest putting back the airbox. Dont do pods until you have it running right. Just making it hard on yourself.
