Hi new to this forum, picked up a 1981 maxim xj 650 project... I pulled carbs and cleaned them, the pilot screws were way out of wack.. What is a good starting point to start with them, any tips on setting these is welcome! I have a factory manual and says nothing about setting them.. Thanks

bottom out the pilot screws and then back them out about 2.5 turns is usually what the gurus suggest on here. after that you'll want to use a colortune

Yup 2.5 is a good starting point. Check valve shims and do your vac sync first or you're going to get poor results attempting to tune the pilot mixture.

Factory manual won't have that as the carbs were factory sealed and mixture adjustment was not "serviceable" ;)

Don't be too concern if factory settings are way different. When I did my carbs, one pilot screw was set at a shade under 1.5 turns out and another was almost 4 turns out. The other tw0 were pretty close to 2.5. You might have similar results after color-tuning. It happens.

Just be careful when you bottom out the idle screws. Bottom them gently.

There have been a few people who have busted the tips off by bottoming them too aggressively.
