Ok, still reading and learning. Come to find out, my diaphragms must have been changed or my upper retaining rings all cracked on there own. I just removed my diaphragms, cleaned them, and put them back on. Put the retaining ring back on (making sure 2 holes in bottom of slide faced engine). All I did was go around ring with a channel lock squeezing. No way are the ends going to come together so I can glue them. I thought the rings came with a split in them. Now I'm F##KED! Is there a trick to get these rings back tight?

the plastic rings crack all by themselves, it doesn't seem to be a problem.
don't try to fix them and make a new problem. The best thing might be to put a big o-ring where the plastic ring was.
    or you could do this

I have replaced the diaphragms on two of my bikes with the JBM's, highly recommended. I found one out of four of the rings cracked on my XJ650RJ.

That's great, and not to pricey. Are all diaphragms rolled like that under the covers? All the carbs I've taken apart were never rolled like JBM' s picture.
