    Hello all,

I have an 82 650 Seca. In the past I had to perform an emergency guidectomy but since then haven't had any shifting issues. Today, I gave the bike a wash and as I was driving home was unable to downshift into 1st. There was play but it just wouldn't engage. Took off the shifter cover thinking it was another broken chunk messing with me but there was nothing there. Checked out the shift lever assembly and the shift shaft assembly for possible cracked springs but they were good as well. I'm able to shift from neutral to second and back down. I can't shift into first at all. I can shift into 3rd BUT it doesn't engage and the running bike just acts like it's in neutral again. Any help or advice would be most appreciated. This is my daily driver and it's maintained pretty well. I'd love to get it back on the road again with this warm weather!

just because you don't see anything in there doesn't mean that there's nothing there. there's three shift forks, three grooves for them to ride in and about a hundred other places for chunks to get caught

Thanks for the reply. Yeah I know there are lots of places for a chunk to get caught up in, was just hoping there might be something else I could do. Anyone else have any tips or advice on this?

looks like its time to pull the engine and split the case to install new chain guides and clean the chunks of rubber out. or find a good running engine to replace the problem child.

Even a good running engine will need the starter chain guide replaced. It would be handy to have a spare engine though.
