Hey, im stumped on my starter. Reassembling my bike on a rebuild, and it wont start. Starter wont spin, even when hooked directly up to the battery. How much physical resistance should there be to turn the gear on the snout by hand? It seems pretty hard to turn.

Everything seems to be in spec, and all the orientation tabs seem to align properly. Give me some more ideas.... Im stuck. Its probably simple too...

Starter is still messed up or the battery is dead... I'll call you, just got your text, too.

Check the ground..... I almost think your not completing a circuit yet---- if it were a short, you'd probably get lots of sparks--- if it were binding, it should at least ACT like it want to turn....

(Putting contents of our phone call here for others that may come across this)

So, what i did was, take the starter out. Paint it and the engine...

I will sand paint off the bolt holes on the cases and bottom of the bolt holes on the starter. In addition, i will sand off the case ground lug too. I would think that the snout would provide enough contact for ground.... But maybe not?

Remember there's an o-ring in there that would theoretically create a gap in the metal

Note to self: next time painting a motor.... Be sure to sand off the grounding points...

Well... Now the starter spins. So i went to start it. Carbs overflowed and no spark. Onto the next issue(s)....

Im gonna take a wild guess and say that the lack of spark is due to a bad ground too...
