Well... OK... Max was never dead. Just buried under a nylon cover and snow.

BUT, I dug up a new brain... err.. bought a new battery,.. wired it in and within less than 30 seconds of cranking Max Breathed again !

So... After a bit of idle time, letting the juices flow, I set off on a quick spin to work...
And now you know why I need to make Max a little less "street" and more "Ranch"... That mud was a feet-out, 10mph max, 2nd gear/high rev, walkathon... Anything more became a mud-slinging, rear spinout, engine killing mess...

    Anyway...

While I was on the pavement, this bone-stock '81 650 would bury the speedo at 6900 and keep accelerating until about 7500 ... Since the speedo only goes to 85, I've got no clue where it stops. OTOH, I DO know it will still bury the speedo in less than a 1/4... and I'm not even a speed racer... That's just going from a stop and nearly bogging on accel...

    Max is my best friend...

Better tires and and a stiffer suspension and I'm gonna be dancing...

I wish (?) I had anything to do with it. It's as bone stock (Ok, the spitfire windscreen is mine) as the day it was built... and it's my Daily Rider...

The Dual Sports are cool, I guess. But I'm just not into using a ladder to get onto my bike. After looking at similarly priced Dual Sports (The KLR650) right now, if I was going to buy a 2015 bike it would probably be a Royal Enfield C5 Military with nobbys and crash bars like they use on the One Crazy Ride in India... They don't go fast, but they go anywhere and require no skills or tools to fix... (the only auto I could maintain myself was a '68 Beetle) and can take a sidecar... and WWII Military Weapons Mounts...

That 650 will have all the power you need and more......... once you get used to playing around in the powerband, you get used the "geez, sounds like its gonna blow up" sound, and you start to realize that its actually a "come on, Honey, I'm just getting warmed up.....when are you gonna REALLY let me rip!?!?!?" sound.

    Your bike looks good, man!

It was really a pretty amazing find/buy. 5K original miles, ALL accessories, and ALL paperwork... Shop Manual, Owner's Manual, even THIS: (Some stuff photoshopped out...)

I carry a Duplicate printed on business card stock.

As for Power and Speed? Yeah, plenty. My previous bike was the 650 Special twin. Sadly, I totaled it in 1987. I'm a 400-750 man. Don't really care for smaller or larger. And this bird flys fast enough for me. Like I said, I don't know how fast it is going when I start hiccoughing at 7500 RPM... but it's well past what the speedo reads. (Caveat - I almost never ride that fast. I'm more of a 55mph back-road guy. But it IS a hoot to do it occasionally...)

If by "warranty" you mean, "Yes Officer, this is MY Motorcycle... here's the Owner's Card to prove it..."

Glad the Max is up and running again. Sounds like you have some catch up time to pend with it.

Yes most of the dual sport bikes have taller seats (30"+) because they have taller suspension. KLR's are great had one for yrs, loved it! Now have a BMW GS1100R that has been stripped down. Tall bike but they do make ways for both of those bikes to be lowered. The BMW's have a little moment when you first start out and turn, they have high center of gravity and like to tip.
