I decided that since I have the 550 running, I should start working on the maxim now. especially since I have a bunch of new parts to put on the 550, both in stock and on the way. I am about to tear the front end off and rebuild the front end of the 550, so I want something to ride in the interim. I had to change the air filter box on the maxim because the original one had a huge separation in a seam.

luckily all I had to remove was the starter, the intake manifolds, the battery box and the electrical on the left side of the air box. I did not need to remove the motor mount bolts.

I haven't yet opened up the carbs, but this bike is super clean! it only has 15k miles and was definitely stored inside all it's life.

apologies for the crappy cell phone pics, my cell phone sucks the big one.

Is that duct tape on the airbox? Was it in the bike that way?! Thanx to Red Green, people feel that stuff can fix anything!
Ironic fact: it won't stick to ducts. Heat affects the glue. ELECTRIC tape is the answer! o_O

I would say a good high heat silicone would also help the cause

oh man, I love the red green show! if you look closely at the last pic, you can see that the air box has been replaced. I got lucky and found a solid replacement on the bay of "e". the one with the duct tape is destined for the garbage bin.

cyclenoob, it's great to see someone can attack a bike without turning into a chopper, hardtail, bobber, farm trike or otherwise. Well done.

thanks, truth be told, I originally bought this bike with the intention of making an electric bike. but once I rode it, there was no way I could live with myself if I yanked the engine out and replaced it with an electric motor. I am still dumfounded at what a great deal I got on this bike considering it's condition. it is super clean, only has 15k miles on it and is amazingly rust free.

well I got the rebuilt (every rubber part replaced, the church of clean and the whole nine yards) carbs installed and all hooked up with the new air box and I couldn't get it to fire. there is quite a bit of gas in the tank, but maybe not enough to reach the petcock. not sure, gonna get some more gas tomorrow and check the float levels again now that the carbs are on the bike. pulled the plugs and they were dry but carbon fouled from the previous carbs. they all had good spark though. yes, the valves are in spec. that's the first thing I did when I got the bike and I haven't put 100 miles on it since. any thoughts as to why it won't fire? I might even do a compression test again if I can't get it to pop tomorrow.

If the plugs were dry then you aren't getting fuel into the cylinders. Did you set the petcock to prime to fill the bowls?

yes, but like I said, I am not sure there is enough gas in the tank to reach the petcock.

so I put 2 gallons of gas in it today and checked the float levels. they were all about 2mm below the adjustment limit. it still would not fire, so I popped them off the bike and tweaked the floats, popped them back on and checked the levels again and they were spot on the low side but in spec. buttoned them up completely and it fired up on the first crank. then it raced to 4,000 rpm so I shut it down and backed off the idle speed screw till it idled at 1100rpm. then I shut it down and took the forks off. I will do more fine tuning after I get the forks rebuilt and I can roll it outside.

I also did a quick compression test and got 150psi across the board.

Eveyone who reads this, please make note. ^^^^That^^^^^ is why we keep telling people to check their fuel levels. Just a little too low and you won't be riding anywhere.

Very glad that you have it running. If you find that it loses power or stumbles at high speed you'll know to revisit the float height. Those buggers are sensitive.

well now the forks are rebuilt, tire changed and balanced. I just ordered caliper and master cylinder rebuild kits. once the brake hydraulics are rebuilt I will install the stainless lines I bought 2 years ago. now that it's rolling again I can get it outside and tune the carbs, that is, when it stops raining.

Curious, what level did you Dry-set them at..... And what measurement did the wet-set put them at?

I never measured the dry set, I just went straight for the bench wet set and apparently I set them all low. I didn't even bother to bench check them before putting them back on, I just tweaked each one and put it back together. the original rubber parts are soft enough that I can pull and reset the carbs pretty fast. now it fires right up but there is some tuning left to do. speaking of, the sun is shining and I should go roll it outside to do some tuning. see you later.

Is that flasher adjustable. Or does it only do that one sequence?

just one sequence. in the video, I waited for it to stop flashing and released the brake then grabbed it again. there are some "programmable" ones out there, but they will cost you more.
