I have a 1985 XJ700. I am looking to replace the stock exhaust to go for a meaner, louder sound. Suggestions on brands or where to look?

I prefer them louder, which is why I'm looking to change exhausts.

Bare Bones did stock Harley slip ons that were slash cut and baffles removed. Really like the sound. You can email him and he'll share what they had to do to mount up and jetting changes.

Or there are 4-1 or 4-2 kits on eBay. Not sure what would be better

Logically 4-1 would be lighter, which would be about the only real difference other than cosmetics.

Here's a 650 with straight pipes. I personally think it sounds cool if you decide to go that route

Plan on needing to rejet; and on pissing people off; and on making people hate motorcyclists even more than they already do.

Simply remove the mufflers. Instant shorty straight pipes. JC Whitney still sells a bunch of stuff for older motorcycles if you want something fancy(ish).

Will that still require a reject?

As long as you keep the stock collector and stock intake you should not need to rejet. My Seca came with a pair of JC Whitney slash cuts (steel wool packing, so not quite straight pipes) and ran well on the standard jets.

I didn't see any on JC Whitney, but I did find some I like on J&P Cycles. I was wondering if anyone has just removed the baffles on the stock exhaust?

Please don't. Original exhausts are getting harder to come by.

These are a little high priced, but probably won't sell so you could try making an offer in a few weeks. http://www.ebay.com/itm/81-YAMAHA-X...C70-/351087842409?hash=item51be775469&vxp=mtr

WIth what you seem to want you'd probably do well to have a shop (or a talented friend) make you a set of pipes anyway.

After some googling I saw that the baffles weren't removable and it was a permanent change and I'm not going to do that. Will pipes for a seca fit a maxim?

Textbook answer is: No, they will not fit since each model, each pipe, and each collector all have specific lengths, diameters, and angles.....making each part model-specific

The REAL answer is: It depends.....there are some things that will fit and interchange. You just have to do your homework and read through the forums. I have put several posts out about cross-over parts, so has MiGhost.

I'll see if I can find my posts.......

I can't locate those posts anymore.......

But from swapping things around here, basically it comes down to having the correct collector underneath. 650 maxim didn't have a collector underneath....it was a crossover tube. The 650 seca non-turbo had a collector.

The 550 and 750 seca pipes can swap between each other and I think also the 650r non-turbo.....but I'll have to check my stuff out there and see what I've swapped again.

The 650r non-turbo collector is specific to that bike
the 55r collector is specific to that bike

I'll have to go refresh memory, but there are other collectors that are almost identical to each other except for the the orientation of the pipe inlets. They can swap as long as:

    1. you dont mind the two inside pipes being possibly slightly proud in the middle rather than flat across the front of the bike, or vice versa depending on what you're swapping.

    2. if you swap collectors AND pipes, just about everything will bolt up. The collector mounting bolt underneath is at the same point on almost all (if not all) the engines

    3. You may have to make some small custom brackets for hanging the mufflers themselves. Some have a secondary angle as part of the muffler, others are straight, so there's less interchange there.

I'll still keep trying to find my notes on the swaps, but they may have also just been in private messages, too.

A member here that has a 700Max(Strat) removed his mufflers and added a automotive turn down to his pipes without a rejet.

I put straight exhaust pipes on mine and it didnt need a rejet. Used just regular car exhaust stock. sounds great. My kids can hear me coming home from work about 2 mins before I get home =)
