I bought an 81 550 Maxim cheap because the clutch was toast and the owner though the tranmission was shot! Anyway, I took the plates out and sure enough they are wiped out. I bought a kit with springs, steel plates and fiction plates. Put it all back together and it slips sometimes more at lower rpm's. I've done dozens of dirt bike clutches, dozens of Suuzuki GS 550,750, 1000, 1100 clutches and never had a problem! Also, there is a funny looking ring with 3 little stubby teeth on it. I assumed that goes toward the outside? What have I missed!!

I think the ring with the stubby teeth you're describing is a lockwasher that lock the shaft nut in place.
