    1981 yamaha xj650 maxim. 6600 miles.

I have been going through everything just want to make sure I don't miss anything so the bike is safe and ready for the road.
Here is what I have done and going to do soon.
Front brake- rebuilt caliper, including new piston, rebuilt master cylinder, new pads, new brake lines, and a new brake lever.

Rear brakes- new shoes and springs.

Clutch- new lever with o-ring, new cable

Electrical- new fuse box. New starter button. Lights all work, Need chrome ring around headlight, need to clean turn signal switch.

Forks-new seals and oil-to be done soon.

Carburetors -replaced as the originals were locked up. Need to adj.

    Tachometer -cable replaced.

    Tires-to be replaced soon.

Needs oil/filter change and air filter.

That's where I'm at, what did I miss?

Also, when doing the forks what do I need besides the oil seal and dust seals?
    Thanks

You are on the right track.
How long have you had the bike?
Do you know what the PO claimed to have done on it?

    New battery.
Should probably also add your choke and throttle cables to the list.
Replacing your carbs sounds spendy - rebuild them and they will be as good as new.

Make sure that the nut that connects the seat to the handlebars is NOT torqued....

I have had it about 8 yrs. Po parked some time before that. Last on the road in 1995.
battery was done when I got it, so yes it will need one. Probably should pick up throttle and choke cable as a back up.
Carburetors weren't pricy when I got them. I will eventually tear the original carbs down, but the ones on it now work great.

Remember to do the valves BEFORE syncing carbs. Replace gaskets and rubber anywhere you open anything.

Start at the front of the bike to the back and check every nut and bolt for tightness. Also make sure that all cotter pins are in place. This includes axle nuts and the bolts on the torque rod on the rear brake. I missed this one on my bike after riding for a couple of years.

If you don't already know learn how to properly adjust the travel at the clutch handle, front brake handle, rear brake pedal and rear brake light. Also there are location marks on the shifter lever, rear brake pedal and shoe wear indicator which will align with markings on the bike. Some PO's have these misaligned which will throw any adjustments off.

    @Hf: ok.

Well, yeah....they can mis-align that shoe-wear marker, but if they did that you'd best check your whole bike for any little thing else.......that wear indicator has a little tab that fits in a little notch. If it's installed properly, it can only fit one way. If its installed improperly, then it could be in any position AND the little tab is ruined......

BUT....if you adjust the rear brakes by how far the pedal travels, or how sensitive you want the brakes to be, that indicator means nothing anyway. I literally pay no attention to it. I go by feel, and visual examination of the shoes. I don't care where the arrow points.

Rear brakes are adjusted to my liking.
I'll do the clutch when the cable comes in.
The front , I will check the manual on this one. Want to bleed them one more time.
