85 xj700n---I understand mechanical issues pretty easily, but when it comes to electrical issues I'm a rank amateur at best.

If I let the bike sit for a week or so and try to get it going the starter will turn the engine fine but I can't get it to fire without charging the battery. I've checked and the plugs are firing but today it didn't fire with a squirt of starter fluid. (although when I think about it I may not have opened the throttle.) So I guess I need a battery.

But will someone explain how the battery can be strong enough to turn the engine over well but not have enough power to fire it off? I could understand it if it was barely turning the starter, but that's not the case.

There's just enough power to power the starter with nothing left over for the tci to fire the coils. Your batter is at the end of its life span. Get a fresh battery then you should be good.

And invest in an automatic battery maintainer to extend the life of your battery during the storage months.

about the battery tender. they are cheap and they are the best way to prolong the life of your battery. the quickest way to kill a battery, is to store it in a discharged state or to let it discharge deeply.

Thanks. It seems to be strange to be happy that I need to buy a new battery, but at least it's not something more sinister. I have a battery tender, jr. which I use if I know it's going to be sitting a while. But I'm a little leery about leaving it plugged in continuously.
