I saw a very old thread and a guy said he can rebuild them, I sent him a message to see if he still does rebuild them. In the mean time...

Does anyone know of anyone that can rebuld them? I heard of a place in New Zealand that makes new TCI for the xj650's. But I haven't been able to find any information on the company.

So does anyone know where to get one rebuilt or where a guy can buy a new aftermarket TCI?

    I have a '81 XJ650 Maxim.

Probably Hyperpak http://hyperpak.co.nz/Store/ I'd be looking at Ignitech myself if I had to replace mine

    Shane,

How do you know yours needs rebuilding ?.....You could send your TCI to a member on this forum with a known good-running bike with like kind to see if your TCI works on their bike......easiest way to tell if you have a bad TCI.

I did that with mine.....a member here was more than willling to test mine.....just a thought.....

I was ^ that ^ guy, and have access to an '81 Maxim (a friend of my son's). It would take me a few extra days to do the testing since he lives out of town. I'm in Western Kansas, so postage wouldn't be much. If you can wait a couple of months I could probably even courier the TCI back down to you myself. I can't check it on my personal bike as it uses a different TCI from yours.

I have a mechanic that I take things to when I am stumped. He said that the ignitor is bad. If I have to send it somewhere to be tested I will but I would rathar take the mechanic's word for it and just replace it. I've sunk a bout $1000 into this rebuild and I'm ready to be able to ride this dang machine. If I can't get an ignitor then it's going to be trashed. I'm sick of dealing with a bike that I haven't been able to ride just spend money on.

Contact user Chacal, He should have a good used TCI on hand. Working spares also come up on Ebay fairly regularly, just look for a seller that offers a guarantee. If you have an old-school TV repair shop in town they should be able to repair your TCI (assuming they are willing to take on the work). The most common problem is the electrolytic capacitors rupturing. Bad solder joints and lifted traces are the next most likely issue. The board will have to be depotted, but a good shop will know how to do that.

Ebay has a very good selection but you have to use "CDI" in your search criteria as all the sellers seem to list them that way. Just make sure you match the sticker on your TCI to the listing on Ebay as the sellers don't always list them correctly for fitment.

Good luck with it and hope you get to ride it soon.

I bought a tci for my 750 from the company in New Zealand. Works great. You got to go through their Ebay store. Shipping is slow. Took about 2 weeks.
