    Wanting to ride to the next town of any real size... and realizing that to be safe you have to take a Jerry Can because it's over 100 mi away... with only one iffy petrol pump in between.

    Swap a 750 Max tank onto your wee beasty. It's about a gallon larger.

    That would be great. I didn't know if there was a bigger tank that would fit or not. Time to start looking for one.

    OK... Found one. Gonna need some cleaning up & new paint, cap, petcock, etc., but what can you expect for $60?

    Another upside is that the 750 tank has a fuel sending unit. You can either blank it off, or add a fuel gauge to your machine. There are a few threads about adapting, and making a fuel gauge for just that purpose.

    Yeah. But It was a good enough deal that I figured "why not?". As long as there are no leaks, bodywork/metalwork is something I can actually do - unlike, say, tune an engine.

    People are more scared if welding gas tanks than is warranted. Every tale or experience I've had with fuel tank explosions turns out to be a problem with the prep work and technique. Caution and adherence to a thorough cleaning is something that people tend to skip because it takes so much time to do well.

    Besides, explosions only happen when rapid expansion meets a sealed container. Don't seal up the tank while you're working on it and the worst that can happen is it makes a big "whoosh" sound and flames shoot out of it. Wear protective gear, like you should be at all times (even though I admit to breaking that rule more often than I should), and you will be fine.

    I'm doing to gravel-polish the inside and strip the outside before I decide what else needs to be done - whether to re-paint and install, weld on it or junk it. It will be a good bit before I have to worry about adding heat.
